He has a 350hp vehicle, and he says: "PS: I have never been overtaken on the Autobahn since..."

The Euro only Porsche GT3 would eat him up?

The Porsche 911 GT3 is the fastest one-make series production racing car in the world.

Developing 370HP for just 1140kg, it accelerates from 0-100km/h in around 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 280km/h.

must have been a amazing race to participate in, with all those exotic cars and people to boot. Which car is the fastest is probable a moot point. What were u wiling to do and how stupid u were is probably a better point.

Dear Gustav,
I'm from Italy and I've probably some problem with english language.
What about the subject of you post:
"My friend raced the SL55 prototype engine!"
I've read the article on www.bmwm5.com but iI don't see where the tester talk about a SL55.
He compare his B8 Alpina with a S55 compressor !!!

Where is the SL55 and where is the fantomatic prototype engine !!!

Could You kindly explain?

Many thanks.

Andrea

Here it is:

I arrived back at Hamburg airport from a business trip to California this summer, went over to the parking garage and got into my Alpina B8 4.6 Touring (E36 4.6 liter V8, 350hp, one out of 27 ever manufactured by Alpina).
I live in Flensburg and have approximately 160 km (100 miles) from the Hamburg airport to my home in Flensburg.
I have never before lost an autobahn race, and I have raced against M5's, Porsche 993/996, S500, CL500 etc. The B8 will do 300 km/h (188 mph) maximum speed and 0-200 km/h in 18 seconds.
After approximately 100 km (62 miles)of high speed driving, a black S-class Mercedes starts tailgating me at 180 km/h (113 mph) in the left lane. I find this annoying and increase the speed to 220 km/h (138 mph), but he is still behind me. I then floor it and at approx. 270-280 km/h (169-175 mph) he signals with his left signal light that he wants to overtake. Up until this point I thought it was an S500 or S600 with no restricted top speed. But then I pull right and he overtakes me so fast I cannot believe it. I am doing 280-290 km/h and I then read on the back of this Mercedes "S55 Kompressor"! Holy sh**, a supercharged 5.5 liter V8 S-class Mercedes. Must be a one-off from AMG. The license plate reads "MA-xx 10", so the car is from Bavaria. The driver is in his fifties and he and his wife sits very comfortable in the car and talks casually... I am sure that even at those speeds that car is very comfortable.
I follow them for about 30 km (19 miles) as traffic slows him down to 180 km/h (113 mph). I notice two very fat exhaust pipes and some black metal mesh in the rear bumper in between the exhaust pipes. Nice car!
Unfortunately I had to exit the autobahn before this S-class Mercedes, so I never got a chance to talk with him about his car.

BTW what does the GT3 have to do wwith the issue at all?

There are roadgoing Dauer 962 on the Autobahns too, and he haven't encounter those or a GT3 for that matter, what's so weird about that?

I was saying that I find it hard to believe his statement: "I have never before lost an autobahn race", when he only drives a 350hp Alpina BMW.

Why would you find it hard to beleive when you don't know how much Autbahn driving he does?

Comments like yours just make it boring to post here.

Go ahead and think he's lying.

I still don't understand.

In the article "Someone" talk about a S-class, probably the nes S55 amg.
This is correct ?
If Yes, could You explain why the subject of this forum is
" My friend raced the SL55 prototype engine! "

It's so simple ....

Because the S55 Kompressor is the engine in the SL55 AMG.

Sorry but I don't find this really interesting .... also if we consider that a S55 it's 280 kg (more then 10%) heavvier and there is a difference between the torque range (SL55 2650-4500 S55 2750-4000).

Bye

2fast4u:

then why are you reading it? You can just ignore it if it's not interesting.

I thought it might be intersting to see the AMG directors racing BMW Alpinas with prototpy engine for upcoming AMG models.

2fast4u ignore my posts in the future, then we don't need this discussion.

Dear Gustav,
this is my answer:

First of all I read the post cause I've received a reply-mail and always I hope that the subject coud be interesting.

Second, now I know that the AMG director drove a S55 in december 2000 and his license plate is "MA-xx 10". Never Knew before.

At the end I'll follow Your suggest and I'm sure that You'll do the same with my post.

Regret.

I hope you know you MB bible, cause Porsche and ALPINA is clearly not your area of expertise.

When you drive an car that easily will put yourselve on the happy side of 280 kph you wont find that many car that will smoke you. in high speed. I have an similar car and I have only been beaten twice.

One more thing, the only thing you wrote about the Porsche that is true is the 0-100 kph time, rest is wrong.

It has 360 Hp, topspeed of +300 kph and weigt more that 1200 kg, I think between 1300 and 1400 kg. And its not fastest in anything, but it is an fantastic car with track capabilities that are almost unbelivable.

BTW the SL 55 is an fantastic car and I have the chanse to experience first hand the high speed capabilities since it smoked me bad 6 months ago in Germany.

I´m a little suprised by the replys in this thread. No one seems to get it. At this time the S55 Kompressor is being introduced to the public for the first time at the Paris Auto show. This race happend 2 years ago and no one, except for Mercedes-people apparently, knew about this car and what kind of "horsepower-race" this engine, that´s now available in E55, S55, CL55 and SL55, would cause. I find this race-story very entertaining and also very interesting due to the that it´s a prototype car. I can imagine how much fun the guy in the S55 had.

It really must be amazing to have had a s55 with almost 500 hp to drive especially when no one in the general public knows the cars exists except for maybe people like us who view all these forums. When u can smoke almost any car that pulls up next to u and u are in a 2 ton plus car it really suprises everyone
