55/65 tire pressure on 19" wheels

Hi,

I am curious what you consider your ideal tire pressure on AMG 19" stock wheels, in terms of traction and comfort. I am particularly interested in the in SL65.
I find that MB's listed cold tire pressure numbers on their sticker simply too low.

Thanks,

Wolfman

Hmmm...

Nobody on this board having an opinion of what you found to be the best tire pressure? Is everybody just going with the MB suugested settings?

Please post some replies.

Thanks,

Wolfman

I'm running 44 PSI up front and 46 PSI rear with the 19" AMG performance package wheels with nitrogen filling on my SL55. When they heat up they reach upto 48 PSI front and 52 PSI rear. I like this pressure a lot. Seems to work fine with the ABC (sport or not).

I run 38 front and 40 rear on my SL65. Tire wear is spot on.

When I have filled the rears to 46 you can feel the tread raised in the middle. At 52 you must have this problem in a huge way.....

Well, when they are heated up I'm driving 150MPH so I cannot really check raised tread. However, I always return my worn tyres with very nice even treadwear. Or so the guys who do my tyres tell me, and I have no reason not to believe them. I'm running Pirelli PZero Rosso's BTW.

Thanks for the info! While I love to have sustained 150 mph runs as well, I'll have to stick to something around 100mph in the US as I enjoy keeping my license. I assume that you also have to go down to Germany to go fast since the Netherlands are even worst than the US when it comes to speeding

Btw. I am using about the same setup as Schiznick 38F/40R regular air...

Yep. Düsseldorf is a nice place to have lunch for instance. Did 190MPH once on the way back

Last time however I took Steve from MBenzNL to Düsseldorf and on the on-ramp of the Autobahn my intercooler pump resulted defective as the supercharger shut down Now I'll have to go over there again to test the new IC pump

Porsche guy who drives SL63 w/ perf pkg AND perf suspension
I fill to 38 or so cold. Then I drive a long distance, 1/2 hr or more on a hot road. Then I adjust them to 44 tops, but usually 42 or so
You gain 3 to 5 lbs the hotter they get

I had a track day and my pressures were down where yours are and when I clipped an apex, the rumble strip blew 2 tires. Keeping pressure at proper levels are critical.

Ingenere,

Dino - what tire size (and brand) are you using?

I too have the SL65 19" rims on my SL55, and did a couple of track days with it at Watkins Glen. Lots of fun, and faster than the '89 Porsche 928 S4 I'd been driving on various tracks for about a dozen years.

I had found that a 'hot off the track' pressure of 40 psi with Michelin PS2 tires in size 295/30 X 18 (rear), 255/35 X 18 (front) was just right for that car/tire/size combo.

Thanks for the bit of further info.

255/30 and 295/30.

PS2

The SL55 is surprisingly good on track. My last time out in the instructor group, I was matching one of the guy's Z06 times........ until the brakes gave up the ghost! Slowing 4000 pounds generate allot of heat!

Dino,

I had the same issue with the brakes. Knowing I wasn't going to be pushing it very hard, as this was my 'retirement from track' drive, I put on a new set of Akebono ceramic pads F & R. Went completely through the pads, down to the steel backing plates in 2 days (about 200 miles) at 'the Glen'. I wished I'd have gotten a good set of track pads, even for just the two days!!!

Grazie for the tire size/brand info.

PS: Where in AZ? I spent '64-'68 at ASU in grad school.
