Raced a grand national gnx

Was driving home going about 40mph when i pull up next to a GN gnx,he looks over at me and revs the engine, he jumps out 1/2 car length in front then around 90 i pull him by about 1 1/2 c/lengths we let up bcause of stop light. At the light we have friendly conversation, really nice car he had, always wanted to collect one..

GNX & Gran nationals were the Original Supra. They were the kings of the road and also they have historical importance b/c they were one of the first cars to be aftermarket tuned with an ECU chip.

Perfect description. Used to love listening to them spooling up on the line at the track. Kinda was GMs "coming out" of the dark ages of near ZERO hp cars.

A few grand in mods and they would be jumpin.

exactly!!! i had a 84' GN...non-intercooled then i had an 87' GN...bone stock at Houston International Dragway it ran 14.14...this was fast back in the day! In 86 and 87 the GN was the quickest production car made in America. With an chip, test pipe, 9' K&N and big radials on back it ran a 12.97. GNX was a limited production car of about 580 cars in 87'. I also had a 89' turbo T/A...the GN engine in a f-body car...sleeper...ran 13.10 stock with a 1.81 60' on stock rubber. sorry for the long write up but those cars are still awesome...and it show-cased what American manufactures could do in the late 80's with technology...245hp, 330 ft/lb tq out of a 231ci motor.

just my $.02 cents worth.

things with and without wheels
Gnx is a very rare production tweaked out Buick Grand National. Back in the day if you wanted to buy any parts for the GNX you had to provide the vin number along with the registration, otherwise you got regular Grand National stuff.

yes it was a monster 3.8L inline 6. Typoon/syclone (also a GM monster) ran 4.2L V6. both were massive engines for their time. Both were monsters to drive, typhoon/syclones were probably the best 60ft cars of all time haha.

i am quite certain they were a V6, not an inline 6. gnx are rare cars so it probably did not have any mods to keep their original collectable status. straight line machine back in the 80's for sure.

Nope, the Syclone and Typhoon used the 4.3L Vortec V6, not the Buick 3.8L casting. Totally different motors, but both essentially cast iron 90 degree V8's with 2 cylinders chopped off.

it's a 3.8 V6 in the buick.. the typhoon had a 4.1 or 4.3 V6 if i remember..

here is a couple of pics of my 3.8.. it's a stock block casting (it's all built), BUT it has all the goodies on it.. it's rght around 800RWHP... car still is driven on the street with full interior..

a little launch pic , you can guess which one i'm driving (in the background)

vid of a run in 100* temps in Cali.. 9.65 at 139mph..

An '89 Turbo TA is a GTA Trans Am (V-8 cars) pulled off the assembly line by PAS(Pontiac Division) with the 3.8 V-6 turbo retrofitted with the Turbo 2004R tranny. They were used in the 1989 Indy 500 as the pace car. All of the cars were white exterior with tan interiors...some cloth and some leather. Very few of these cars were hardtops. Most were leather/T-top like mine. The only difference between the Buick GN V-6 and the Turbo TA V-6 is the cylinder heads as the Turbo TA used a casting similar to the FWD V-6 cars of the day (center valve cover bolts on the Turbo TA). Another anomaly is the turbo casting had the word "Garrett" raised on the turbo TA and it was recessed on the Grand Nationals. I know because I used to own car #565 of 1555 built. BTW my best e.t. in that car was 11.42@118 with all stock internals. Only mods were larger turbo, injectors, race fuel, computer chip, and exhaust. The car was a beast in the first 60' with most times in the low 1.6's. My best was a 1.595.

The Grand nationals and GNX's were two star performers for GM in the lackluster 1980's. Even the Corvette didn't start to wake up until the 1985 model year. It was a shame the way high performance took such a vacation from GM in that decade.
