Article on all-new upcoming SLC class
Mercedes is hard at work developing the upcoming SLC. AMG and HWA are going to turn this car into a true bad a** car for sure. Their goal is to destroy the Audi R8, and various other Porsche and Ferrari models.
Twin-Turbo 63 AMG V-8 with light-weight body, chassis, carbon brakes, possibly DSG super-fast transmission, sounds great to us, eh?
I predict the car will have a wide-body to handle much wider tires than a normal SL.

(Note how in these pics, if you squint and stare really hard, you can see through the protective camouflage on these prototypes that indeed in 2009 Benz will update the SL body again and the current SL's roundish headlights and tail lights will be gone in favor of updated and more powerful squarish L-shaped front lights and squared off clear-lens and enhanced LED rear lights. Supposedly the interior might be updated too. Will it have the new S/CL's updated Navi interface unit? We'll just have to wait and see. That would be very nice though.) Pretty cool stuff.
Also supposedly Benz will put in a retractable rear wing (ala Veyron) and it looks from the pics that the car will have the dedicated rear diff fan and diffusers like in the current CLK 63 Black Series.
Alot lighter weight, 750 Horsepower twin-turbo AMG V-8, fast new transmission, super brakes, killer looks, man this thing is going to slaughter even the upcoming 550 or whatever horsepower R8 V-10 and even a Ferrari 599, new 911 turbo GT2, whatever.
And just imagine how Renntech, Kleemann, Carlsson, Brabus, Evotech, etc. will have a field day with this coming up with crazy ECU and other insane upgrades for the car. Renntech/Kleemann ECU to 900+ HP anyone?

Compare the SL facelift with the SLC/Black Series and you see that the SLCs roof will be fixed:
Nice line on the coupe, too bad it won't open.
This leads me to believe that there will be no SL Black Series but a HWA special (like the CLK DTM) which is now being called the SLC. Both an SLC and a Black Series will be a bit too much and confusing I guess.
The SLC will basically be a heavily modified SL. There is still uncertainty about which engine. I think either the 6,2l V8 or the V12 biturbo. I cannot imagine they'll use the '(slightly) old fashioned' 55 engine.

AMG/MB/HWA is really shoving it up Mclaren's a##! If they thought that the SLR's were hard to move, wait till this beast shows up! Ah, what the hey, theres enough crazy oil, shiek and royals around to use up the remaining SLRs. Who knows, a stay at the prestigious hotels in Abudhabi could include an SLR as a rental or hotel/airport shuttle! Wouldn't that be one great perk!
Wouldn't this be the best way to end the R230 series, aka C6 "blue devil" vette. Talk about going out in style

Hope they can keep the price down. SL55 is priced close to a well equipped 997TT, 997TT will run away from an SL55. They need to keep it light and make a good 6 speed stick for it. DSG is OK but if it is going to try to be a true sports car they need a 6 speed stick.

Not a chance they will keep the cost down!!!!! All that carbon fiber. If it is a Black Series, my guess with a V8 300K with a V12 400K.
I don't beieve that a true sportscar needs a 6 speed. You have your GT3 RS for that.
While I believe that at some point we may see some kind of manual matic from AMG, it is not in their philosophy to put a manual in their cars.
It appears that they are willing to sacrafice that component of driving for the all out performance.
While I certainly get satisfaction from a well executed heel toe downshift, I get an even better feeling looking at a really low lap time.
My personal view is that AMG's customers overall do not want a manual. The art of rowing your own gears is a dying breed....
