or are the standard and amg cars made on the same line?
I visited the Bremen plant in 2003 and saw the cars being made. At least then, all the cars are made on the same line with the logistics chain presenting the correct parts to the correct car.
There was a huge amount to see and take in, like the two robots working as a team to cement the windshield in place. Really weird to see one robot holding the windshield while the other coated the edge in adhesive.
What the video doesn't show is the body-in-white production where there there are hardly any people there, almost all robots. Again, we saw 3 or 4 robots working together to produce the side frames for the C-Class (built in the same plant), one every 48 seconds.
It's always fascinating to visit a plant like this and tells you it's one thing to design a car, another thing to design the manufacturing process to bring all the parts together and achieve the desired build quality.
Porsche take it to extremes in their plant in Leipzig where the Cayenne is made. A separate logisitics supply company next door is reponsible for supplying the right kits of parts to the right worker at the right time to match the car moving down the line and they are paid when they get it right and penalised when they get it wrong.
Here another one on engine assembly, when they say hand made, surprisingly, it's hand made.
