Unfortunately that is normal. Pretty poor. My wife had an SC430 Lexus and the finish was much better. The car itself sucked.

hmm, thanks Lou.

sort of disturbing that MB would leave this uncovered looking like this in a $150k vehicle.

I wonder if sanding and repainting (off the car obviously) would be an option.

Mercedes Benz seems to do EVERYTHING for a reason.
Could there be some structural advantage with it being like this?
Considering the cost of an SL, it would be disheartening for Mercedes Benz to cut corners, especially in an area as obvious as this.
Anyone else?

I looked at mine and the large metal piece has some small imperfections in the metal finish on the driver side. Almost none on the right side. Considering the top works so well and does not rattle. I think that matters more than the paint finish on something you are never going to notice while driving. Especially since I have my top down most of the time anyway.

+1

It doesn't really bother me. I've looked up there before and seen the exposed mechanics, yeah it could be cleaner but it works well. I've never had a passenger who's looked there either

granted im picky, but I would just expect MB to have some better attention to detail on a visible interior part, since they are typically so good with that.

Unfortunately in NJ, the top can not always be down.

Weather is a bit different here in Cali.
Its only 76 today.

So you drive your SL in Salt and Snow ?
That would bother me more than that moving interior parts finish.

My god, what is the point here? Its a piece of the roof structure that won't be noticed and it works. What does it matter?

To each his own I have the same issue in my SL 55 i'm just glad I got the car LOL If anyone critiques the issue come to a complete stop get out of your SL and kindly open the passenger side door and hand them a Bus Pass! Let's not **** the Germans off.

well a miata works just fine as topless driving machinery, but I purchased a mercedes for a reason. That reason includes flawless interior surfaces, and I found this to be a disappointment.

I notice this every time I back up in the car. I simply expected MB, who seems to have considered everything else, to have also realized that buyers of a $150k vehicle would expect that to be smooth.

Did you pay cash for your car ?
Do you have a payment that is eating your lunch ?

Dude you have issues. You should have bought a Maybach.
Its funny until you mentioned it I never noticed that part. Guess what ? I dont care about it in the least. The other day while driving I tried to look at that part. Guess what. You cant do it. Its not anything you or anyone else will notice.

It like having a beautiful wife that loves you. She is hot and fast.
Are you going to worry about the mole on her head you cant see?

Drive your car and enjoy. If you cant afford it sell it.
But to talk about that part is senseless.

Im missing what money has to do with this?

When I back up, I turn around, and I notice this. Yes, Im a perfectionist. I find it strange that mb would leave it exposed in this fashion.

Of course you don't notice it while driving, but I do notice it every time I back it out of the garage.

No its not a deal breaker, but its mildly annoying.

If you were a perfectionist you would not be driving a MB you would be driving a Lexus
