SL55 Deep Exhaust

I went to a muffler shop today, they cut out my resonators, and the car sounds just absolutely wonderful, I mean it's just a little bit louder, but a whole lot deeper, I love it. It sounds classy but yeat ballzy.

congratulations, just a fact you should get an X-pipe as you obviously lost lower end torque, If I wanted a bit more sound of the oem setup I would remove the front primary cats extended the o2 sensors way back or add headers.

Enjoy!

I didn't know removing resonators would make me loose tq, I just talked to vadim, and he said it wouldn't, it's strictly sound related.

If you remove some of the restriction of a stock exhaust, you lose torque. Backpressure=exhaust velocity=(scientific exclamation deleted) torque.

Edit: explanation, not exclamation.

It was discussed in the many topics that are relevant to Resonators and catalytics on the W211 AMG board.

I straightpiped my XJR and loved it, so I dont think the idea sounds too far fetched. If you had to put a percentage on it, how much louder/deeper would you say it is? Also, which resonator did they cut? I know there are multiple ones under the car.. Ex, 2 cats (front), 1 resonator (mid), 2 mufflers (rear) on the XJR, cant recall whats under the SL55..

There are only two resonators/mufflers. The two in the back.
The two in the front and the two in the middle is primary and secondary cats.

Here's the stock exhaust. Two resonators.

If back pressure = torque, why don't race engines that achieve max hp/trq try to make back pressure? They don’t. The goal is to flow the exhaust gas out with the most efficiency based on the engine configuration and dump it into the atmosphere as quickly as possible. A good example of this is a F1 exhaust system. Once the exhaust gasses are tuned through the headers to aid the intake, they send it out in the shortest amount of distance with the least amount of resistance. This is one of the biggest misconceptions with engine tuning.

It already has an H pipe...so no need for an X pipe.

I'm confused, I've looked at the diagram and don't see an 'H' pipe. Left and right bank looks separate from header to tip. Am I missing something?

Can't you just take out one of the Cats 1st or 2nd to make it sound deeper? And just a question, which cats would you take out for this modification? Id rather not cut the pipe, just so I can put the cats back in if I don't want it that loud and I just want to cruise on the PCH, you know.

I didn't want to take out the primary cats, cause of the simple fact that the o2 sensors are right there, and also because that could be a major issue with smog. I took off the secondary cats, because it's very easy just to go back to any muffler shop, and have them weld them back on, also I took out the resonators for deeper, and louder sound, as for the cats off, you get better flow, I also think with them off they give you better the sound.
