Why do People buy supercars?
Is it to show that you got it?
Is it just to say you got it?
Is it just to say you made it?
I don't know really. Just wondering if anyone here thinks about it. I mean I have a friend that has couple and i asked why do you get it when i can buy a nissan gtr can beat it.
His answer is does it look like my cars. LOL hmm so I dont know really.
Hahaha many reasons i guess.

Hmm i haven't got one, but i guess this is the answer.
"You don't buy supercars with your head, you buy them with your heart because you will love them, and who can explain love?"

A Mercedes AMG SL is like a Nissan Skyline (when compared to a Veyron). So go to a Veyron forum (I know there aren't any though) and state your question there.
Seriously: The SL55 (if bought second hand), offers quite a lot for the money (extreme power, very prestigous, retractable hardtop, luxurious interior, slick looks etc.) Compared to a new Nissan GT-R, it's a bargain.

50 % _ "I want everybody to know that I'm rich"
30% _ Real auto enthusiasts
10% _ "It's bad for someone rich like me to not own a least one supercar"
10% - to make friends, attend meetings, have something to discuss about other than stock market and subprime crisis.

I guess I would fall in the "just for the love of the car" category... (i.e. 30% autoenthusiast).
Of course you get a nice little tingly sensation knowing that chicks around you get their panties wet when they see you driving one, and guys all begin to envy you
But ultimately, I would (cause I don't have a supercar, but have driven several and thus have an idea of how it would be like) enjoy the vehicle for the sheer beauty of the mechanics behind it. The intoxicating power (as usually is the case with supercars) that pushes you to your seat during acceleration, to the superior handling capabilities (in some supercars, can't say it's the case for all of them), to the astounding looks (once again, subjective), to the great lumps of iron masquerading as V8's, V10's or V12's, etc... etc...
It's a beauty not everyone can understand or appreciate You just want to run your fingers down the bodywork, take in the savagery with your eyes, and hum the engine noise all the while getting a boner just thinking about pushing the throttle down

Not scientific but seems very accurate, I would throw in the chick factor as a big part, especially for singles.

They're kind of pointless in many ways because people who buy them never drive them which is sad. It's as if they're made not to be driven and you're made to feel bad if you do. Me, I'd drive the heck out of it just to feel how it drives, handles, what the seats and dash are like. I've always wanted one and will get one.
I think one of the reasons the SL65 and co failed is because they're just a Mercedes that doesn't look any different than an SL500 but at a supercar price. Sure they might outrun many a supercar, but they're not a supercar anymore than a GTR ever will be.

This is simple:
1. Showing off
2. Prestige
3. Nice racks flock to it
This is too easy.

Because they can
Because they are enjoyable
Because they are fast
Because we get an adrenaline rush
Because we get to meet other cool people with supercars
I understand that some people get them so people think they are rich, but how does that help them? Will people "like" them more?
Wait, do I own a supercar?

LOL many different reasons.
Well if you have that much cash i guess whatever LOL.
Thanks for the answers haha. Yeah sl65 is sad. They should have just have SL65 blackseries at 200k LOL that be awesome. SL550, SL600 SL63 and than SL65 black that would have been better marketing. At least than the SL 65 would look different and high performance.

I am hearing allot of assumptions from guys who haven't owned or driven exotics much, and saying what they 'think' people are all about who have them.
I can't speak for everyone, but I can speak for me. I have owned, driven, tracked and raced a dozen or so Ferrari's in my life and from my side, it's about the what the looks and the performance do for me. It's about listening to the sound of the engine when I get a double clutch downshift right, while clipping an apex, maximizing my exit speed, and attacking my favorite road or track......blah, blah, blah. Sure I could do this in an M3/5 (I have), but the personal experience is different. Not better or worse, just different, and not an occasion.
It is not about impressing the neighbors, showing off, getting the best valet spot, and especially not attracting women. Mainly because the ones who are attracted to you for your car are generally N.B.T. (Nothing but trouble).
Maybe its the way I grew up, but I have always felt that you can't please (or impress) everyone (that is an exercise in frustration)...... so I just try to get it right for me. That's probably why I daily drove and F40 for 4 years...... because most days when I looked in the garage..... that's the one that called to me the loudest.
Sure, there are exotic/supercar owners who couldn't tell an apex from a bus stop, and as an FCA Chief driving instructor it is a little frustrating. But it is my pleasure to help those guys discover the real deal!

Same reason you got the E55, right?
Let's face it, a family truckster would do just fine .. or any other 4 door. The gap between the rest of the car buying world and you is much larger than the gap between you and a supercar purchaser.
How many people would never think of spending $90k on a car .. but it made perfect sense to you. Because you can and you want it.
Same thing for supercar purchasers.

I dropped off my S for service and had a C class loaner for a day it couldnt get out of its own way I almost got creamed by a semi merging on the highway. Once you have a fast car you cant go back only forward to something even faster.

assuming my SL and CL are supercars... my reasons:
to enjoy the high quality, speed, safety, comfort, style etc that they can offer.. so it's basically an internal factor... it's purely appreciation of the product itself..
for external factor, such as showing off wealth and social status etc, i don't think one can show off too much with an SL or CL when you can see several around the block... it can't draw much attention. . probably it has to be a F-car or above to do the job...

SL65, 427 COBRA (CSX-3127)73 911S, 246GTS (DINO SPYDER), CORNICHE,1962 PORSCHE TWIN GRILLE ROADSTER+
AMAZING PERFORMANCE! AMAZING STYLING! AMAZING PERFORMANCE! AMAZING SOUNDS!
I have been around for just a few days and I (like Dino) have also owned and raced some of the worlds best "SUPER CARS" of their time. "I LOVE THE SMELL OF BURNING CASTOR OIL IN THE MORNING!" (you need to have been there to understand)
1. FERRARI 365 GBT/4 DAYTONA
2. 427 COBRA #CSX 3127
3. PORSCHE 550 SPYDER #550-054
4. 330GTS
5. 300SEL 6.3
6. VIPER
7. SL55
8. SL65
9. FERRARI DINO SPYDER
10. 300-400 OTHER EXOTICS OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS!
Unfortunatley for most people they ONLY get to read about "SUPER CARS" and look at the pictures/videos or maybe if you are lucky you will see them parked but most will never actually drive them at speed.
I ever since I was 7 years old (Go Karts) love to race "SUPER CARS" at full speed! My 427 COBRA with 500hp in a 2,200 lb car was not fast enough so I upgraded the engine.
The main reason for me was always SUPER PERFORMANCE! The accelleration and handling (the GGs)has ALWAYS been the main attraction plus the AMAZING STYLING and sounds are also a HUGE inspiration and why I love EXOTIC "SUPER CARS"
If you really want to experiance "SUPER CAR" NIRVANA try and get a ride in a FERRARI 365 GTB/4 SPYDER at speed! Then if possible get another V-12 FERRARI to cruise along side of you. The sounds, smells, feeling of a vintage "SUPER CAR" It dont get much better then this!
Or imagine a RACE (180 mph) between a 365GTB/4 and a 427 COBRA on a newly opened freeway.. I was driving the 427 COBRA!
My dream is to pilot a P-51 MUSTANG or a F4 Phantom or any other "SUPER JET" but unfortunately all I get to do is read about them and look at the pictures!
