I get about 16 - 17 mpg average, based on a UK gallon, slightly larger than a US gallon, and 97 - 98 octane fuel. It's much as I expected, although it's thirstier than my old SL600 (21 mpg) but not as thirsty as my Ferrari, 13 mpg.

I was wondering since Jeremy Clarkson has been getting around 7mpg and I have heard other people getting around 6mpg!
now forget the cost of teh car but how many fuel stops will the car need for a regular drive!
I mean the engine is already dyno-tested but i think they screwed the hell out of it to make it as lousy on fuel as that!
16-17 is still adequate, but geeze.

15 to 20 mpg (US) depending on my foot and mood. I will say that it tends more to the low end of that range. I've filled up twice @16 US gallons each with 600 miles on the odometer. Frighteningly, I've seen 4-5 mpg when I've driven vigorously; thankfully, gas is relatively cheap in the US

on one of the Gumball rally videos I recall Lonman saying he needed to gas up the SL55 about every 100 miles. Thats about 6 to 7 miles per gallon though with speeds shown on the video perhaps not surprising!

Whatever the gas mileage of the car, it's going to be nothing compared to either the monthly payment or the depreciation over the life of the car, even here in the UK where the cost of gas is about three times the US (though the octane rating is higher and the gallon a little larger).
Difficult to imagine, but used SL55's will be available for a quarter of their current price in, say 5-6 years time.

Take my SL600, it's depreciated $100,000 in just under 7 years. In that time, I've covered 65k miles, say 3000 gallons of gas, about $15000. Not quite noise level, but not far off.
