sound 8 SL safety issue
I have always wondered why my SL55 does not have a seat belt warning
chime as my other Mercs do. Someone has told me that it is safer driving
without belts with the roof down, it might explain it.
Any thoughts.

Yes you always want to just fly right out of the car if you crash. sounds like a good idea to me. Right up until that point where your body smashes a tree and then gets run over by a 18 wheeler.
Maybe someone turned off the warning chime? Earlier years did not have the same beeping sound as later versions cars. My 2007 and newer cars go ballistic if you dont buckle up.

You can have that chime turned on by your dealer.
My car didnt come with the warning chime, I had the dealer to turn that on when my car was in for service B

Count yourself unlucky for thinking it's safer to drive top down with no seatbelt

I agree about wanting the chime turned off- like I can't decide for myself whether to use my seatbelt. Usually I just fasten the seatbelt behind me so it will shut off. Fortunately, you really don't feel it on your back. I think it was changed for 2006 SL model year where it keeps beeping.

A 35mph rear ender would still do serious damage w/o a seat belt. It just takes a second, esp. kids. I just got in a habit to check my daughter's seatbelt is on. We don't move unless her's is on...

sound 8 belts
Obviously belts are a must in all cars, I thought my warning chime was not
working because some people may feel that a roll over with belts on may be
worse. Just a thought.

As a person who had a seat belt save me from going through a windshield, I respectfully ask you to rethink your position on trying to trick the seatbelt warning chime. Later, when I was in college taking physics, I began to better understand dynamics, and hence the need for seatbelts. Hopefully you don't learn the hard way.
