2006 SL55 with 030 Performance Package
I wonder if the SL65 will be huge improvement over the SL55, I just can't see how it could get much better than the SL55 time will tell. Do you think the SL65 will come to the U.S.?

Sorry gents, here’s some more detail.
At the Geneva motor show in March AMG will announce a SL65.
It won't be a listed Mercedes car but an AMG special like the SL73 (R129) was.
You will have to order a stock SL600 and then take it to AMG for modification.
The V12 twin turbo will be bored out to 6500cc and tuned to give 620+ BHP.
Cost approximately E 40,000 on top of base SL600.
However as the base SL600 is not an AMG vehicle in the first place it is not clear if the 65 will have all the other AMG parts such as brakes, gearbox, suspension etc etc.
The SL73 had the body kit but not much else and was not an AMG 'sports' version like the old SL60 or the SL55. In fact I'm told the SL73 was a bit of a pig.

AMG GTC Roadster, E63s Ed.1, M8 Comp. Coupe
I am sure that a new V12 AMG SL will be a great car (I heard 600HP), the 129 bodied version (SL73) wasn't too bad either.
I just would not get any hopes up that they will be exported to the US.
V12 AMG's have been around for many years; the S63, CL63 and the SL73 are build in such small numbers that importing them would probably not make it wothwhile for Mercedes (EPA & DOT certification costs).

LondonLad,
just read your post; you've got some interesting info.
I was surprised to hear that AMG build the SL73 as an upgrade on a customers car.
To the best of my knowledge the S63 & CL63 are build as "limited-edition", a low-quantity, but still production car. Complete as a configurable package. Customers do not supply the cars.
Do you have any more details?

Wolfman,
I visited AMG on Monday / Tuesday this week. I went with a friend primarily to check on his car that was there for some modifications and to arrange some accessories and mods for mine.
When the subject of the SL65, due to be announced in March, came up, my friend showed interest and we were told 'order an SL600 base car now and then bring it to us and we will do the engine mods'
As all SL's (AMG or not) are built in Bremen I suspect you will be able to have the finished SL600 shipped straight from Bremen to AMG at Affalterbach without actually taking delivery of it.
My point is it will be a modified SL600 like the SL73 was a modified R129 SL600 and not a 'factory car' built in one go like the SL55.
Re the SL73 R129 I am told by two very well informed friends, both who have driven the 73 that it was not an AMG sports car in the way that the SL60 was. One of them who has driven nearly every high performance car there is including Michael Schumacher’s 2000 F1 race car described the SL73 as an un-drivable dog!

SL73 dog?
An AMG 7.3 V12 with 525HP, same engine in Zonda, a dog?
and how often do you go round Essex as Michael Schumacher?
thesew cars are built for autobahn speeds and everyday comfort and performance, you want handling? buy a Porsche or Ferrari. Meredes is not for those type of drivers. All AMG's ave creature comforts and are built for performance/comfort. BMW is for sporty and agressive driving, that you can easily get arrested for!

The war between Brabus and AMG continues!
Brabus stroke first with the 6.3 V12 twin turbo that produces 630 hp and 1000Nm (!!). AMG answer with the 6.5 V12 twin turbo.
After speaking with the brabus french importer, he told me that AMG considers Brabus as the only opponent with engine upgrade. Brabus seems to be not as well known in USA as in europe. In germany, the brabus parts are sold in 69% of the MB garages. That's why the two brands fight each other two be first tuner of MB (even if AMG is a part of MB).

There is a lot of difference between an engine and a whole car. Don't forget the R129 was a very old design by the time the SL73 came out.

Sorry??? I think you may have miss read my post.

I'm sorry, its just that the thought of driving such a powerful car and then saying its a dog is quite strange for most of us in th UK anyways.
about thes essex thing, what are you going to use use for SL55 for? Track work ? maybe. but you can't do track like corners and maneuvers on british roads, nah nah, forgetaboutit!

The SL73 AMG had a lot of body roll, the platoform itself was aged, and could not keep up very well with power. I suspect there will be the same thing with the new Sl65 (if this is the correct configuration). I doubt this will be an upgrade from an existing SL600. AMG is the in-house tuner, and they do not nexessary limit themselves same as the other tuners. Maybe the gentlemen from AMG know that the car will be available too late, and they do not want you to wait for the real car.

I know that the V12 AMG subject has been trampled to death, but there is slowly a little more info coming.
600+ hp; the word is over 600, but probably not by much...
1000 nm torque (740 lb.ft.)
SL65, CL65, S65 designations
Introduction in spring (probably as LondonLad indicated) and for sale in late 2003, first roll-out, the CL65 (?!)
As Ronald indicated, with AMG's many details around power and specific features may change yet until the cars actually will come off the line and into customers hands.
Again, my personal opinion is that these cars will not hit the US unless privately imported (as before with the SL60, SL73, CL63, S63).
