Spark Plugs?

What spark plugs are people going with in a 2003 SL55?

OE? Platinum? Iridium?

What is suggested service life on OE plugs? 60K miles?

How much time to change all 16?

Thanks.

I went with Bosch plugs. The service manual says to change them every 5 years or 60K miles. It took we the better part of a weekend to get all 16.

Those little buggers are buried!

Copper or platinum on the Boschs?

did you go copper or platinum on Bosch? Could you share model number?

I have seen a lot of bad comments on platinums in the Mercedes. I have used platinums for many years in many different cars for long life, never seen any performance gains. Do the platinums mess up the twin spark system due to the higher resistance level of platinum to copper?

I just called Dealer and they want $15/each for new plugs. They said that they were installing platinum on everything and good for 100k miles? This story does not add up with technical manual.

I will pull a plug this weekend and see what is in there and what shape it is in.

I would appreciate your comments based on your experience.

two different spark plugs for SL55

Mercedes Technical manual says MB# 004 159 13 03 which is a NGK ILFR6A iridium/platinum plug or Bosch FR6MPP332. See press release below.
This NGK plug is easily good for at least 100K miles versus Mercedes 60K miles recommendation.

All of the parts stores and the websites are saying NGK IFR5D-10. Talked to NGK technical staff and they are confused because these plugs are different lengths and heat ratings.

Sparkplug. com even has the wrong Denso plug for the SL55. Denso website recommends the IKH20 versus the sparkplug website IK16, again different lengths. http://www.globaldenso.com/PLUG/cros...ce/1034_1.html

I have to wrap gifts for Santa and will pull a plug this week sometime. I will let you know what I find.

Pulled a plug. It is a NGK ILFR6A with MB and NGK logo in ceramic insulator and model number in metal base.

Based on what I seen in the cross reference sheets by internet sites and autoparts stores, i would be carefull in following their recommendations.

OE

plug M113 sl55 engine
bosch7422 about 4 bucks at the parts store MB list for same plug $17.
www.autohausaz.com carries them.Remove the coils ,use the 17mm boot tool to remove the plug boots and it is an easy change out takes about two hours.
pm for boot tool if you need one.
Platinum plugs either bosch or ngk7090 are fine. never use multi tip plugs. The M113 hates those.

multi prong problem?

Could you comment on why 113 engine does not like multiprong spark plugs (eg. Bosch +2, and +4)?

Did you install and have misfires?

Thanks.

A

single side electrode platinum provides the proper spark and issues with multi tip plugs on both the M112 and M113 engine due to misfires are why mercedes warns against them.Yes they do cause misfires
