3rd Hose on I/C Pump?
I went to install a new Johnson CM30 intercooler pump on my 2003 SL55 and found a third hose coming off the pump.
It is a 1/4" fitting on the inlet (suction) going over the wheel well over to the top of the washer fluid tank?
Why the hose tying the I/C system to the washer system? Breather hose?
Has anyone seen this before? It is not in the MB tech manual.
Any help appreciated. I reinstalled old pump until I get a better idea of what is going on.
Thanks

I don't have the answer to your question, but I'd also like to know. I'm planning on upgrading my pump soon. Pictures would be greatly appreciated to know what to expect.
Where is the pump located and how do you access it?

I just changed the aux coolant pump on my C230K and that was for the heater and washer tank. Are you sure you have the right pump?

Well when i did mine there was no one on the baord to answer my question at the time so, i capped it off....
I later found out it was a heat source (no fluid ran through that line) for your washer fluid - which living in Ariizona, dont have much need for... In essence you can just leave it alone and have no problems - unless you live in Chicago - then you may not want to do it...
I have had great success with the Johnson so, i would recommend doing it even if your washer fluid freezes...
Good luck

I figure someone will comment on my high tech hose clamps.
Washer tank is not the best picture but, the 3rd hose connects to a metal fitting on the top of the washer tank. The 2 other washer hoses cover the connection.
I do not see how the 3rd hose could heat the washer fluid without contamination. Also, no return line if there is a heat exchange in the tank. ???

Great pics. I'm waiting for my CM30 to arrive.
Does anyone have the FSM? If so, what does it call the 3rd tube? Does washer fluid drain out of it? Seems to be attached to the inlet of the pump. I can't imagine what its for.

Answer: Washer tank heater hose
attached is the diagram from MB tech manual.
Now, I need to figure a way to "tee" the line. Anyone have a 5/8 x 5/8 x 1/4 tee?
Also, how do I get the female plug in BeltfedBob's picture? I will love to connect with proper plug versus hardwire.

mistake?
Two pumps? hot water recirc and i/c pump?
See tech manual attachments. The pump that I pulled is identical to the one in the hot water recirc picture.
the "other" pump, (i/c pump??) has a vacuum line to the back.![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
Need some help here?

I would contact the Johnson supplier to get the part number for the housing and contacts. The purchase theconnector parts from them or someone like Newark Electronics.
The picture was from a guy selling the hi-volume IC pumps for the Mustang Cobra, they claim they are the best for the SL55
Here is the connector for the Bosch pump, if yours looks like an injector connector will fit, you'll be in luck.

This is a great topic for a sticky / DIY. Has anyone taken pics of their install? I understand that due to Johnson pump mechanical differences that a mounting bracket may need to be fabricated.

I have yet to do the install because I'm waiting for my CM30 pump to arrive, but from the looks of the diagrams you appear to have the REST pump out, not the IC pump. Keep us updated

Fixed the problem.
I screwed up and was working on the wrong pump. The OEM Bosch unit is much bigger than the Johnson pump.
I replaced the IC pump today. It was right next to the other pump (recirc pump which is similar size as Johnson).
Bought my pump from LET and they included a rubber hose to make up the difference in diameters. Kudos to them. I removed rubber bushing around old OEM pump then pushed rubber hose from LET into the bushing. LET included hose clamps to tighten hose to body of Johnson pump.
I have Carsoft with live data feed. Before, Air intake Temperature running 68C and cutting out supercharger at 85-93C.
Now, intake air is 28C (60F outside today) with spikes to 40C when full throttle for 5 seconds. Quick recovery to 28C when cruising.
I confirmed Bosch unit is dead. Green slime on all internal pump parts? Big housing/Tiny impeller on OEM unit?
Pictures coming. my camera takes 3MB pix and I have to squeeze them down to website limits.

pictures of install pump
The Bosch pump as a small vent hose about a foot long that is not needed on Johnson unit. It looks like a vacuum hose.
Close up of the pump shows how the plumbing hose makes up difference in pump sizes.
Label of the plumbing hose included. You can probably pick up at Home Depot. Much easier than fabricating bracket.

Post Mortem on Bosch Pump
Green slime on all internals and impeller inside this big housing is tiny.
connected old Bosch pump to battery and no movement. I will probably pull old pump further apart to find cause of failure.

If you are trying to replace the pump that has the small 1/4" line coming off of it, you have the WRONG pump. That pump is for the heater recirc circuit. the pump you want to replace is just to the right of this pump and has only two hoses. I made this mistake and kicked myself when I figured it out. If in doubt check the operation of the pump with a 12v source on the connector. The small pump will probably still work while the larger on (IC pump) probably wont.
