AMG 19Inchers?

hi everyone,
Does anyone have any info whatsoever on installing the 19inch AMG wheels for the SL55?
Thanks.

Hi,

If you mean the styling IVs then the rear arches need slight rolling and you need new wheel bolts all round.

The rolling radius gives a speedo error of less than 1% so no problems there. No other (ABC) settings need changing.

Above info from AMG

Graham.

What is involved in rolling out an arch? I have never changed the wheels on any of my cars before. I got a price of $3400 for the wheels. Any idea what the original equipment is from AMG with those wheels on a sl55?
thanks. jf

Interesting question and I would like to know also what rolling out a arch is? What do the bigger tires do other than cosmetics? Can I get this all done without voided my warranty and do I have to have MB do it?

A MB dealer can do the work. The dealers in the UK have a thing called WIS. I think it stands for workshop information system. There are instructions on WIS for fitting the AMG styling IV wheels.

Believe it or not the WIS instructions say to use a hot air gun to soften the paint and a soft face hammer to roll the arch!

The ones I saw at AMG felt like a tool of some sort had been used as they were perfectly even all the way round.

Rolling refers to bending up the metal at the edge of the wheel arch (fender) to make room for the larger tyre to move up into the arch as it hits a bump in the road.

Bigger tyres give more grip in the dry and as the rim is bigger and the tyre sidewall is smaller the sidewall should flex less resulting in better handling.

In the UK the 19" is not available as an option on a new car, only as an accessory at about the price you quoted. Don’t forget to add tyres, bolt and the refitting of tyre pressure monitors if you have them.

Oh geez now it sounds all complicated. It's not comforting to think some random tech is going to be hammering out my fenders! Yes I do have the tire pressure monitors.. Oh well I guess I had better get a price on all of it before I decide.

Mookie,

I don't know. My friend’s car arrives in a few weeks. He sent it straight from the factory to AMG to have the wheel mods done.

I want to see it in the metal B4 I decide on mine.

Wheel Options

I will have the 19"wheels fitted to my car when it arrives in March. The cost £3600. It is an option that you can order.

The AMG wheel catalog that I have lists 8 different wheels that you can have fitted to the SL55.

I don't seem to understand what you guys are talking about. Why can't you just bolt on 19" rims without any mods? I've seen 20" rims on SL's before and I know that no mods were done.

You can't order the 19" styling IV as a factory option, only as an accessory fitted by the dealer. Don't forget to add the cost of tyres, bolts etc.

The styling IV rears are 10J X 19 ET28 as opposed to the standard styling V which is 9.5J X 18 ET33.

The extra width and offset means the wheel sticks out 1/2" more.

I have been assured by the dealer that this is what I'm getting. All in for £3600. The car will also be de-restricted.

I hope you are right and have been lucky!

If you are having it derestricted then the car will go to AMG after it leaves the factory. They will allow E900 for the brand new standard wheels and tyres so that would make your price about right on the 19's, but derestriction by AMG costs about E2500 so something is wrong.

Good luck

Graham.

The de-restriction is costing me £600.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned on this board is a sump guard. I was told it is essential to get, especially in the UK due to the poor roads.

Its a cover that protects the engine compartments from under the car. I got it as standard equipment here - Dont know about EU and the UK/US.

Graham (or anyone else on the forum!),

Can you perhaps let me have a direct e-mail address of some knowlegable and helpful person at AMG (preferably in Germany). I am having endless problems with the local AMG agent in S.A. re the incorrect pressure sensors supplied with my 19" IVs, and my patience has now run out.

Many thanks,

Guido

I suspect they will have to stick to them then!

When is your car due?

Would you be kind enough to let me know how things go?

Since with the 19" rims ABC settings don't have to be changed, would the 17" rims, could the ABC be changed to allow a lower car level? Not a slammed look persay (which i say at a dealer which i loved! and the salesman said i just have to press the SPort button and that would give me that look but it didn't) but more of a slender smoother look.

Just ordered one set for US$7,435.00 + tax (including Michelin tires and installation) from a dealer in Texas! Are they overcharging me, because I've seen posted something like $3,600 but may be for wheels only?! Even so, over $3K for 4 z-rated Michelin is crazy! On top of that, the dealership told me that there is only one set of 19" Styling IV that would fit both the SL500 and SL55 (front 8.5" & rear 10"). Does anybody know whether this dealership knows what they are talking about?
