I have a 05 sl55 and I have also been considering this mod. The site I'm more familiar with is http://www.wilhelmy-it.com/. I have read positive and negative results from this product, but have also read that wilhemy had good support. If you do a search on smart top or mod 4 cars u will see other threads on this topic. However I would love to hear more 1st person feedback.

SLK 55 AMG
Dreammer, i took your advice and check out emotormania.com and i couldn't any other place offering more discount. I just order mine for SLk 55 and the instruction doesnt look that hard so hopefully it would be easy. How was your installation? was it easy? btw what do you drive?

I purchased one from emotormania, received and installed. The installation was somewhat easy accept the carpet does not like to bend and it was hard to get your hands under it. Everything went smooth accept for the power connection as the last step. For some reason I was not getting power, after multiple checks, I unplugged the blade connectors that it came with and rotated them 90 degree and all was well. I broke three small plastic clips that had no impact on the reinstall of the components. The plastic parts that are on the car are small and brittle. The instructions warned me but it was to brittle. Everything went back together well regardless.

One thing to watch out for is that they sent me the 1st generation of instructions, if you go to mod4 cars site they now show instructions for an easier install method on R230 models

Seems to work as advertised and the set up through the instrument cluster is pretty slick.

It works great. I had a friend install it for me. Very easy if you are at all mechanically inclined. It is the first thing that every Sl owner should do.

Just ordered one a few minutes ago from mods 4 cars for the SL55 I'm picking up tomorrow. Does anyone know if the dealer can tell if it's installed if I go in for service?

I got the mod4cars one installed in my SL55...was a little challenging to install because my hands didn't reach very well but once I got it put together its worked fairly well. One note, the "all windows down" doesn't put down the back windows...and equally the "all windows up" doesn't put them up either.

No, once the front window is down you can then push the button again and the rears will lower. Once the front windows are up push up again and the rears will go up.

It's not one touch so you have to hold the button continually to get the backs up or down.

2007 Väth SL65 AMG. 2007 BMW Alpina B5s. 2007 BMW M6.
I bought one on ebay.de (Germany) for my old 2004 SL600 over 2 years ago.
"Kufatec" was the brand.
Then I got following problems;

#After taken the top down, the right window was unable to lower!
I would allways have to wait about 30-40 seconds before I could get it down...

#When the top was down, the display said that the brake lamp was broken.
But it never was...

Hopefully there are better ones out there today!

My problems aside, it's a REALLY nice option at a low cost!
Allmost a "Must Have"...

Just got my Smart top module from emotormania.com. Took almost an hour to install, mostly due to difficulty in accessing the wiring due to the limited space. Once installed it is pretty cool though to be able to do the custom set-up using the steering wheel buttons and the speedo/tach displays.

Yes you can, by pointing the key-fob at the door IR sensor and keeping the 'unlock' button pressed. Works only if you are standing next to the car.

These modules make it so that you can do it with the lock/unlock buttons via the radio controlled part of the fob, and by pressing it three times. Then you can walk away and the roof will open/close on its own.

I believe you can also program it to open/close the roof while driving.

smartTOP
Product Features:

Comfort soft top control while driving: Within a programmable speed limit (0-60 kmh / 0-38 mph) the top can be operated automatically with a short push of the open or close button.
Remote control: One-Touch operation of convertible top and windows with the original remote.
Super Comfort Mode allows starting engine during remote top operation. Also allows turning the engine off, getting out and locking the doors, while the top is still closing.
Chirp Feature: Short alarm siren chirp when locking the car. (IMPORTANT: This feature requires the factory alarm with "panic" button on the key remote).
User programmable: All features can be individually enabled or disabled. Some also allow different personal preferences to be set. All settings are retained even if the car battery is disconnected.
Shop/Diagnose mode: If activated the smartTOP is completely passive, as if it was not installed at all. It becomes invisible to diagnostic tools.
Future-proof investment: Should new features become available for this module, it can be updated easily and at very low cost.

2004 SL55
For the SL55, the trick is to remove the curved panel that runs from the door jamb to the storage bin on passenger side. It's virtually impossible to clamp the super thick ground wire through the small opening in the bin. Human hands weren't meant to contort that way. I tore my hands up before just deciding to dismantle the surrounding area. The panel is held in by a couple of hex screws and clips that pop right out and back in. Hope this helps!

Seriously, this should be everyone's first mod who has a hardtop vert. Considering how much you paid for the car, this is a cheapie mod that has sooo much utility. Top operation up to 35mph is very useful when you decide to pull the top down at a stoplight and it turns green. The chirp is also nice when locking the car, so you can tell beyond just flashing lights that your antitheft is armed and doors are locked. I was once at a coffee shop with car parked with top down in the parking lot. Sat down with my coffee indoors, looked out, noticed it was starting to rain lightly. Click Click Click Done!

Also, I believe I remember reading in the manual that there is a bypass for the module when taking it in for service, which would make it invisible to diag scanners. I'm thinking it's essentially just a piggyback setup, could be wrong.

Off topic, not sure if many people have discovered this, but when you have the top down and you lock the car... the center console and glovebox automatically lock too! I used to feel uneasy about this since I keep a few things in the center console. Kudos, MB.
