Has anyone converted there Steering Wheel Shifter Buttons to the New Paddle Style? If anyone has completed this conversation, let me know what you did and what was all involved!

From everything that I have heard, the newer wheel with the paddles will not work on early cars.
I wanted to do this on my '03 and ran into a wall. I even contacted AMG, and they said it wasn't possible.

Dave,
I just had it done on my '05 SL65 by a local MB whiz. PM me and I will give you his details. I am not sure if it's possible on all years, you would have to discuss with him.

Just my opinion, but I think supergluing plastic to the buttons is not becoming of a $100k+ Mercedes...
The conversion I had done used OEM paddles, I will get some pictures up soon.

I suspect G Kats was just kidding but if not, folks should know that Crazy Glue doesn't do a good job on plastic. Neither does Epoxy, for that matter. You'd want a glue specially formulated for plastics. FWIW....

I have the 07 paddles (and the 07 AMG performance steering wheel) on my 04 SL55. Took me a while to find someone to modify the paddles. The right paddle needs to be modified with a new microswitch (different resistors). The left paddle does not need to be modified. Then everything needs to be connected to the old button's harness.
It's pretty tricky, but it can be done.

VRP performance parts has made paddles to retrofit older model AMG cars with existing steering wheel buttons shifters. I purchased a set and had difficulty installing them. The plastic that holds the original buttons in is very brittle and I broken the clips on one side. The buttons look great, function well, but I had to place a few drops of crazy glue on one side to hold the paddle in place.
There is a very large thread under the E55 w211. Just search custom paddle shifters. A couple of unhappy people, but I love the look.

That's the price for a new SL55 steering wheel? Seriously?
I paid 400 Euro for a brandnew 2007 AMG performance wheel on Ebay. It had the 2007 paddles on it. I then paid another 200 Euro to have the paddles modified to work on my 2004 SL55.
That's 600 Euro (~ 800 USD) for a brandnew 2007 AMG performance wheel with the new paddles vs. 2,200 USD for an old AMG steering wheel with buttons?

It was an excellent investment, since it really adds to the feel of the car. Although I rarely use the paddles, it's nice to be able to if you want to.

No, it's the round one. It has thicker leather which is perforated in the grip area... and it has these thumb moldings for better grip. Plus the metal made paddles. Great look and feel!

Yes, I had it installed at an MB shop. The performance steering wheel is pretty often available on Ebay-Germany at low rates. Like this one here:
http://cgi.ebay.de/Lenkrad-Lederlenk...2%7C240%3A1318
...for 329 Euros. You can easily install it on your SL and you can re-use your current airbag and buttons. Everything'll work except for the paddles.
It'll be a little tricky to find someone to make the paddles work (the guy who did it for me, doesn't do the mod anymore... but I may give you his contact details, if he allows me to do so). That helpful guy is from the US btw.
