I probably had the 1st 2003 (1/2003) SL55 in Black Opal/Grey and now have a 2006 Black Opal/Grey SL65.
I always watch for any SL55 or SL65 in Black Opal just because I rarely see the color on the road here is So Cal where there are literally thousands of AMGs.
As far as I can tell from researching Black Opal on the SL series it is VERY VERY rare!
In the last 4+ years I have only seen about 5-7 out of 2,000 SL55s in Black Opal listed for sale. I have also never seen a Black Opal/Berry SL55 although I love the combo! It is possible that there is one out there but it would be just sheer luck to find one for sale.
Doing the math I guesstimate that there are only 3-4 Black Opal SL65s. Ironically there were 2 SL65s in Black Opal sitting side by side in mid 2005 at the dealer in So Cal when my SL65 was sold new. I have never seen another SL65 in Black Opal since!

How do you know if you have black opal or regular black? Mines is a 03 sl55 black/red, you can see pictures in my build thread

Black Opal #189 is actually dark metallic blue!
Look for the color number 189 for Black Opal...040 is black

SpiritR230.... Black Opal is so rare especially with Berry....
The R230s are basically 51% Silver and 47% Black... Having a Black Opal is ultra rare and so beautiful why would you want to change?

come on let's stop calling it Black Opal, it's BLUISH GREEN!!!!
I'm not saying it's ugly, maybe one day when I get older like 30 years old I would maybe start to appreciate this color.

SpiritR230, Believe it or not there are 9 shades of Black Opal!
My 2003 SL55 and my wifes CLK were both Black Opal #189 by coincidence. They were similar but different colors! When I bought my SL65 in Black Opal it was a third color...
I bought a new SL63 rear Spoiler for my SL65 and I took the car to the Automotive Paint supply to buy paint... The guy handed me a sample book with (9) nine different colors for Mercedes #189 Black Opal... Each color was a tiny bit different
..
Each sample had a hole in the center and you would hold the sample on your car the get the best match for the paint formula... .
Look at my two SLs and you can see that my 65 is darker and more blue then my 55...
