SL65 stereo upgrade finished...

The SL65 needs cleaning (the dust accumulated from the shop and it rained on the way home), but I only let my detail guy touch so it will have to wait for later in the week...

Top down with view of the new Kenwood DNX8120 headunit with alcantara trim plate...It turned out great and looks really classy in person.

Open trunk (absolutely no trunk space lost...wheel well utilized)...

Ipod in center armrest location (bottom level)...

13' subwoofer in stock location in front passenter footwell...

Focal 6.5" (midbass) and 5.25" (midrange) in the stock door location...Focal tweeter in A pillar...

PS...I got the new rims and tires (255 front and 305 rears - PS2's) mounted today too...I'll post pics when the car is detailed.

I think headunit will look better with carbonfiber trim plate. Somehow it does not look right to me. But your car looks just so beautiful over all

LOL...Olin...you must have eagle eyes...I barely noticed that...I'll get it taken off when it goes back in for the new carbon fiber flat bottom steering wheel, shift paddles, PAC steering wheel module, and illuminated door sill install...

Is that the new 13TW5 Driver? What do you think so far? Passengers must love all that air movement, especially the ladies.

Edit: Also noticed that your amp shells are black. I guess I haven't paid much attention lately as I didn't realize they came in black.

Esh...the 13W5's are the real deal. Given the limited air space of the stock sub location, it was the perfect sub. The combination of the 6.5" Focal midbass drivers witht the JL 13W5 creates a kick in the pants that the stock system could never match.

It sounds great with the top down...not muddy but very tight...it even sounds better with the top down.

The JL amps are a special black series...same innards just with black casing.

We thought of going carbon fiber but I just felt that we couldn't match the weave perfectly. Given enough time and money we could probably find the right weave but I just want to drive and enjoy the car right now...2 months of ownership with only 2 weeks of actual seat time.

We still may go that route...I probably will send a second trim plate to Kicherer (Germany - company who made the CF trim kit) to get the weave just right. For now...the alcantara is still a great option since it matches the interior alcantara on the A pillars and the gauge cluster.

I'm going to keep you build in mind should I ever decide to pick up an SL. I've always been an Alpine guy but that 13W5 in the passenger footwell is downright hot.

In fact, what a perfect reason to pick up an SL over the new E; there would be no sealed off back seat between the cabin and the trunk. I'm running a full 1000 RMS to the 35lb Type-x subwoofer just to get the lows I wanted in the cabin. I rarely turn it up to "bump" but I would probably say your setup gives you more thump than mine does.

The best setup for the E is having the subs fire up through the rear deck. That is what I had done in the E55...see pics below. The bass is incredible and my trunk space isn't as compromised (i.e. I can get my golf clubs in the trunk)..plus the rear deck was relatively stock (I just had it stitched and lined with alcantara...

I'm just a bose -phobe.
Can I just make a little observation of what Im seeing for that faceplate..
Make the whole panel a close match of carbon fiber. Chris can do it. Then black out the inner area around the radio, so you end up with just a ring, or edging of carbon. Enough to carry the carbon from the console up to the radio panel. And around the radio. Then the blacked out radio face will appear larger and blend to the shape of the origional opening.

Easy.

Props to Jerry @ formymercedes.com on the mats in the car and trunk. The turn around time from order to receipt was pretty darn fast.

Any comments on Kenwood?! How is it working?

By the way, if I don't have TV function, will TV work if I upgrade it to Kenwood? Or I'll need TV tuner?!

That would be excellent. The guys that did my audio set up (Blvd Customs) are located in that same building with the DuPont people in Clearwater. Hmm - now I feel like I need to make some quick wheel decisions... I do not think that I can get both greyhounds in the SL so they may have to sit this one out. If not the February meet then I can def do the March one.
