I can't get these damn exhaust tips clean!

The bottom of the tips have black residue on them. I have tried everything! Even a dremel!

Anyone have some tips to get this stuff off?

I use chrome cleaner together with fine steel wool for the tough spots. Sometimes it helps to let the chrome cleaner sit on the carbon build up a while (5 min?) first.

I would stay away from steel wool, for the best results use a clay bar. You will not believe the heavy residue a clay bar will lift off. Just make sure after you use it on your exhaust you only use it for that thereafter and not for your paint or wheels.

Good luck,

Kevin

Agreed. Clay is best, but sometimes it doesn't remove the hard caked on carbon deposits. I only use super fine steel wool very lightly, as a light abrasive. With regular cleaning, you shouldn't run into this much.

I posted this question to a few months ago , and the one reply I remember is some products from P21S. I searched other boards and a few recommended too.

ALso I was at a very reputable muffler shop today, and of course had to ask what they recommend( my tips still have hard water spots & other markings) ....he recommended this stuff called ZEP BBQ Cleaner..LOL. It made sense its built to kill the caked on residue from the grill...I will check it out this weekend.

+1 I use the same exact stuff and a toothbrush. Wipe clean with a rag. Works perfectly. In fact, I just did mine tonight, they had deposits on them from the winter and spring.

it will come off, just a matter of how long you rub. It took me about 45 minutes per side and my arm almost fell off...

I made this thread in the SL section. This is the easiest way to get these things cleaned. Trust me I tried everything and this will get them looking new.
