How fast is a stock SL55 at the drag strip???

I looked at some videos on youtube and streetfire but most of these cars have a little something under the hood. AS the SL55 sits out of the factory with stock wheels and tires, how fast can it run the quarter mile?? Any of you guys ran your cars yet?? Or anyone ever heard how fast this car can go? I'm not looing what car and driver has to say or any other magazine. I want to know what an average driver can do in this car.

Thanks

KAMIL

A healthy SL55 should run anywhere from 12.2 to 12.6 depending on the conditions. I would say 12.4 is a very good time

Those are not bad times at all. I will be testing and tuning the car to try to break 12s on a drag radial.

Possible you think?

As far as I know, Fantasm holds the record for the fastest stock SL55 at 12.4 seconds. The fastest reported time for a stock SL55 on Dragtimes is 12.5 seconds: http://www.dragtimes.com/Mercedes-Be...ag-Racing.html. I've never personally run as fast as 12.4 with a stock SL55 and I've never heard anyone claim a timeslip with 12.3 or faster.

Sub-12s for a stock SL55 on drag radials? My guess is probably not, but it's certainly worth taking your best shot!

I embarrassed myself yesterday at the drag strip. Two things that could be wrong here, either I do not know how to push my car to the limit or the SL55 is just far too heavy of a car along with the inappropriate wheels that I have mounted to run at the drag strip. Here are my results before I packed up and left for home pissed off at myself.

1st Run on full automatic mode:

R/T- .940
60'- 1.922
330- 5.466
1/8- 8.391
MPH- 83.05
1000-11.038
1/4- 13.22
MPH- 104.67

2ND RUN STANDARD MODE:

R/T- -.155
60'- 2.553
330- 6.211
1/8- 9.140
MPH- 84.09
1000- 11.796
1/4- 13.998
MPH- 102.86

3RD RUN STANDARD MODE:

R/T- .336
60'- 2.012
330- 5.504
1/8- 8.455
MPH- 80.49
1000-11.068
1/4- 13.239
MPH- 104.24

I think that our cars are not designed to run at the drag strip for such a short distance reason being, when I run her on the interstate the car moves out and pretty much smokes most of the hot rods out there. Another thing that bothers me the most is that my car is tuned, it should be producing better numbers than this. Any advice from someone smarter than me? I'm am seriously considering on selling her now and buying me a stock SL65 and calling it the day.

I'm going for the record shot. I will keep my SL55 stock till next year this means I have some time to take it to the track and try to get the car to run as best as possible.

I know a bit about Drag Racing since I came out of a 800rwhp Z06 and jumped into an SL55. When I first got my Z06 it was bone stock and started running at the strip doing 12.5 at best. I practiced and practiced almost every weekend. I got the car bone stock to run 11.8 which is .7 seconds faster than when I started racing. A lot has to do with your 60' if you improve that you will get the car to go faster. I will try to hit the track sometime soon, adjust the tire pressure just right and try to hit a good time.

Practice makes perfect, we all need time behind the wheel to get the feel for the car.

I've been to the drag strip twice so far in my SL55. Best time I have gotten is a 12.6xx @ 114.x. My best trap speed has been 116. So far my limiting factor has been my crap launches (best 60' time of 2.1) on the Pilot A/S tires the car runs on. By the fall I'm hoping to get some drag radials mounted on 17's and try to get down to 12.2-12.4 by lowering my 60' time to 1.8.

Its not the car, its your driving. You will end up with the same results in an SL65. These cars have a lot of low end torque, you cannot just gun it and think you will get your best time. You have to learn how to feather the throttle to limit wheel spin, and traction control interference. You may not think you are not getting wheel spin, but you most likely are. Sometimes its hard to hear over the engine and the exhaust. Also, who knows .. your mods might be screwing something up too.

FWIW, I haven´t heard of a stock SL55 hitting below 12.4. I know of one other person who also hit 12.4 (same track, same day as me) but thats the lowest I´ve heard/seen.

And as described elsewhere, the fastest launches happen with ESP off or the car in dyno mode.

BTW, have you taken that beast of yours to the track yet?

Charles,

You need to go to the drag strip again now that you have the CM30 installed.

You should pic up at least 8-10mph.

I haven't tracked the car yet, i've been doing alot of roll'n'punches, However i heard to properly leave the hole you must:
1.have a really good reaction time(well obviously)
2.mash the pedal 1/4 way down, then 3/4 way down, then full throttle (all 3 must me done within a second)
I got this info from a really reliable source..

just throwing it out there, I think other launching techniques would be beneficial to this thread....

Unless you are bracket racing or racing for competition/money the reaction time doesn't matter one bit.

You could sit at the line for 10 days and still have the same 1/4 mile time. Once you break the beam the time starts.

Exactly, RT only applies to actual races, not passes.

You'll be faster if you can feather the throttle just shy of ESP kicking in. Some more specific suggestions here: https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-...how-start.html

Your 60' times on the 1st and 3rd pass aren't bad at all for street tires. The main problem I see is your trap speed(mph) at the 1/4 which is very low........but your ET is right on for those (low)traps. A quick way to tell a bad driver is a slow ET(ex 13.9) with a high trap(ex 118mph) but your slips; except run #2, don't show that. Something is wrong with the car itsself and it could very well be the intercooler pump as mentioned by others already.

My .02 ............spend them wisely.
