can I replace the Nokia 6210 with some better phone?

My SL 55 was probably the last one to be equipped with the Nokia 6210 phone. All subsequent models came with the much better 6310 (triband and bluetooth). I tried to plug a 6310 in the phone's cradle of the car and it would work fine, save for a loud hiss that was heard by those I was talking to, which made it unusable.

Does anybody know wether a special modification to the Command module should be made, in order to install this phone, or any other phones, for that matter?

I talked to my dealer about this, but their salesmen are a bunch of illitterates that just want to move wheeled boxes.

I would appreciate any suggestion.

thank you

I have the same hissing problem when using the 6310i in my E240 with APS 20. The manual states that I can use any Nokia 6110, 6210 (software version 5.0 and above), and 6310i. However, I have tried and only the 6310i gives me the hissing sound and people couldn't hear me on the other side but I can hear them just fine and I can navigate the menus just fine also. A few times, my friends complained about hissing sounds also with my 6210 - I have talked to the dealer (they said they checked it out) but found nothing. I will take it up with them again when I have some time.

Mine came with the 6310 as standard but people the other end complain it is terrible reception.

I hear them fine. Have not taken it up with the dealer.

Blue SL,

diy your car come with the 6310i factory installed or did you replace the 6210 with it? It seems that the hissing noise on the other side of the line is a common problem among those that switch from one phone to the other. This is the reason why I kept the 6210. I would like to exploit the 6310 greater memory though.

Furthermore, I wonder what Mercedes will install in their cars in the near future, because Nokia's new lineup of phones has a totally different shape/size with respect to the 6310.

Mine came with a 6310 so if it is a problem of swapping a 6210 for a 6310, it doesn't say much for the supposed compatability.

I'm sure Mercedes have a procurement contract with Nokia which is different from what Nokia supply to the public. My 6310 came with a Mercedes part number sticker, so Mercedes must have contracted with Nokia to be able to replace lost/broken phones for several years into the future. As for current production, I assume they switch to newer models as and when they come out, just as they moved to the 6310 when the 6210 was obsolete.

Must be a depressing job, working in the frozen wastes of Finland on products you know are going to have a life of just a few months and being taxed to hell and back in the process...

I agree. BTW, Mine says it should work with 6110 (which it does), 6210 (it does too), and 6310 (which i have the hissing sound with)

There is a lot more involved in the MB car kit than there is in the Nokia after market kit.

MB kits are normally backwards compatible but not forwards.

Although the 6210 and 6310 range look similar the is actually a lot of difference in the two models and MB do strange things to the bottom socket data to get it to read to command.

I think you will need a new adaptor (I cant remember what MB call it) its the first box down line from the cradle.

But first get your 6310i upgraded to the latest software version, this may solve the problem.

ver should be 5.22 or higher.

Graham.

I have a MB A 210 that came with 6210 phone, my dealer changed a module in my car in 10 minutes, and now I can use a 6310i, it cost around 300euros (300$)

The original 6210 controller does not work with the 6310/6310i, it was part number 203 820 99 26 (from memory..) - it sounds like David's car has the first of the 6310/6310i controllers, but they still shipped the actual 6210 phone.

Now, there are also slight differences in the phone holder, and officially the 6310/i version is slightly different. (and phones can fall out of the old one, or some connections can be bad) - which may explain the hissing.

Also, there have been a number of software releases on the 6310/6310i controller - and a number of software releases on teh actual phones ..

So, theres quite a bit to work thru to find out what may be wrong ..

thank you, Richard. I have decided to keep the old phone anyway, because the 6310 has become obsolete itself, and with the 6210 I have the advantage of being able to slip it it the cradle of my wife's 430 TE. When the new family car, a 500 TE 4matic, will arrive in October, I will decide on the SL's phone based on the phone the 500 comes with.
