Talking One More Time on Keyless Go...

Trying one more time to find out if the latest production cars with Keyless Go come with a seperate card or if the chip is in the key.

Thank you. My car should be produced any day now and I was trying to find out if Mercedes has switched to the chip in the key yet for the SL55. Thank you for your response.

Your car will probably come with a chip in the key, there is a bit of a mix comming through at present depending on your location.

Dont worry, you can buy the key or the card if you dont get what you want.

Thank you for your reply. I hope you are right because I prefer the chip in the key...BUT...will that be true for US cars or is it a European thing only?

The truth to teh Keyless go is that it is utterly unreliable.

I have had mine fail (i.e. the card not recognized) at least six times. So if you have the card version, make sure that you carry the key with you all the time.

My dealer from Austin, Texas just told me last week, as a reply to my request for a newer key with the chip embedded into it, that the SL55 (produced for the USA) doesn't come with that option: it is key (w/o embedded chip) and card! I took it with a grain of salt, though, considering their records of reliability and (in)competency! The bottom line is still that I can't have what I wanted, i.e. one card and one key with the chip embedded into it!!

I would love to have the keyless go inbedded into my keys. If there is a way to convert from a key and a card to just a key let me know were and how?

Could I ask you Mookie what practical advantage you believe that would give you?

I've asked for a card & a key, both chipped, but just consider the card so much more practical. Am I missing something here?

The SL provides three ways of unlocking the car - via radio from the Keyless Card or Smart Key, infra-red from the Smart Key only or using the physical key stored in the Smart Key.

If you have just the Keyless Card, there is no backup if there's radio interference or if the batteries go flat. If you have the Smart Key, you have infra-red as a backup to radio interference and if the batteries go flat, you can always use the physical key. The roof can only be opened/closed from outside the car using infra-red, you have to point the key at the door handle.

I expect the decision to put the Keyless Card functionality (most of it) in the Smart Key was because of some irate customers who could not get in their car with the Keyless Card alone.

I routinely go out with just the Keyless Card but would not go on a long trip without a Smart Key, not much help though if it's inside the car when you are not. What I also do is replace the lithium batteries regularly, there is at least some static current drain in the Keyless Card at all times, otherwise it would never be detected. I expect the car radiates a signal so that when the Keyless Card comes in range, it wakes up and trasmits back to the car. I also keep spare batteries in various places

There's no doubt in my mind that the Keyless Card is much more convenient than the Smart Key and it has the neat function of remembering whether the car was locked when you walk away. The only downside is this lack of backup.

Bit anachronistic to have a card so you can dispense with the key, yet still have to carry a key and probably spare batteries just in case.

Are there any scenarios where you would want to put the roof up or down from outside the car? (Apart from the obvious Show Time)

The BMW key has gone three years with no battery change - unfailingly dependable and locks/unlocks/windows-up/sunroof -close from a distance of 20 metres. The SLK had a card with a removeable key (handy for manual operation and then taking the key boating etc). It didn't close the roof either.

I'm hoping for the same functionality & reliability, but I think the posts suggest it may not be quite so. We'll see.

My SL500 had Keyless Go, I had the car for 8 months and put 13000 miles on it. I never had the key on me, only the card in my wallet.

For me it worked perfect

I hope it works as good on my SL55 as it did on the SL500 but who knows maybe MB is doing dumbgrades to the system or some sort of supplier problem with QC.
