Lowering SL55 (06)

Yes I have searched and I have read numerous threads, but there does not seem to be any concensus on the issue:

Links (inexpensive) vs. Renntech vs. Kleeman vs. Brabus (all $1400-$2k) vs. Starr(MB tech)???

Can someone please shed some light on this issue...

I am handy DIY. I prefer not to cut/splice into existing wiring. I want to lower anothe 1/2-1inch max. I do not want it slammed. I just want it to look the way it should have come from the factory. I do not want a whole ton of new headaches i.e. alignments, camber kits, etc.

Oh, and I plan to swap out the horrible AMG multispoke 18s that came on the car with 19s or 20s...

As always - thanks for your input

I had the same questions... after installing my 20s I eventually just went with lowering links and have been very happy with them. I figured it was a minimal investment and if I wasn't happy with them they're easy to swap back to stock.

How was the installation? Did you do it yourself? Any tips? Also, any issues with use of the sport suspension etc?

I use the links. Works fine (100%) and I , I !! can adjust it all I want. When ever I want.

PS, 1/2" isnt going to accomplish anything. You'll go lower.

Agreed, you'll probably go lower... I was lazy and didn't install them myself, but from what I've heard here on the forums, it's not that difficult a job. You just need to be careful removing the old ones. Suspension buttons continue to work as expected.

We lower the cars mostly with the STAR system. However, every so often we will get a car that refuses to respond. In those cases we have used links, and then fine tuned the height and suspension with STAR.

sl500b - just sent PM -

Just to clarify - I spoke with John at Adjustable Air Ride (www.adjustableairride.com)

His links are $299.00 plus shipping. And, yes I bought some. Will have later this week and hope to post some decent pics next week.

For anyone in the market - John was very professional and easy to deal with.

W211 is different... The lucky SL owners, has links on all four corners, which makes it so easy.... w211 has one PITA link in the rear that controls both ends.... I might fine tune mine with STAR...

I installed the links on my 09 Silver Arrow edition SL and a few months later took advantage of the huge discounts being offered on brand new SL63's here in South Florida. Rather than order another set of links, at the time of trade-in the dealer allowed me to use a lift in the service department to transfer them to the new car and install the OEM links on the trade-in. As on the Silver Arrow, I adjusted them for about 1" lower in the rear and 3/4" lower in front. The car sits nice and level and can still be raised about 3/4" using the console button, or lowered an equal amount. My normal setting is with one of the two indicators lit, which is right in the midddle. No matter whether links or modules, the ECM is being led to believe the car is sitting at a height that it really isn't, and adjusts the struts accordingly. Using the STAR system actually tells the ECM to seek a particular level. The end result is the same other than links and modules cause the ECM to not recognize the level at which the car is sitting dangerously low. Adjusting the height via the STAR system will not allow adjustment to what it considers dangerously low levels. I prefer the links because it is a simple, easily reversible, mechanical solution.
