02? Are you outside the USA?

You will need to buy a new key. The insides of the old key are bigger than the new one.

I thought the SL55 came out in 2003 (R230) and the R129 bodystyle lasted until 2002 with only an SL600.

You can get the chrome key for an 03-04 Sl55. I don't know what freq it transmits on though.

I have the keyless option so I don't carry a key but I kinda with the keyless fob had the option to open and close the top outside the car.

no. you cannot replace guts.

however, new style keys can be programmed for older cars in the dealership.

if the car is under warranty (obviously yours is not) inspect the old keyfob- most likely there will be cracks on the "button" surfaces. this is enough to replace them under warranty and when that happens they will give you new style keyfobs.

I read on the internet that for security, all classes use different frequences, and would work if it was an S class key.

With the exception of Keyless Go. Although my parts guy says that even when they order the formerly-all-black keys now, they get chrome keys from MBUSA. You might want to check with your parts guy to see if this is true.

Chrome keys will not work on keyless go vehicles unless it's the card version. I have tried this in the past without success. FLSL55 if I were you I would always carry your key regardless of the card usage. If the battery runs out in the unit you will end up being stranded.

My 07 E350 has the newer style chrome keys as well as keyless go; no cards were used in the making of that model MY.

I know when cards where produced as I sell these things all day. The reason I reference the versions with KG cards is because they use the same exact keys as all the other cars since they do not have a KG transmitter in them so the OP should be able to use a chrome key in the card version. We had to write of 4 sets of KG keys because we ordered new style KG keys and the keyless go functions would not program to the vehicle. The only thing that would work is the starting of the vehicle when plugged directly into the EIS. Chrome keys came out in 06 with the S550 it could be possible that it will work in MY06 vehicles, but the set I ordered was for a 04 SL55 and it would not work and when the black KG was ordered it worked fine.

2006 was also when they intro'd a complete change of all part numbers for the KG system, at least in the R230.
