As a newbie, can you describe the differences between the SL600 and SL55 besides the obvious different engines. Are there different suspensions, brakes, amenities?

Your car is beautiful!

The 600's chassis settings are much softer, befitting the less sporting nature of the car. The brakes are smaller as well.

The 600s that have come though us have had a simpler trimmed interior, with no alcantara.

If you looking for straight line speed and tunability, the 600 is a great car. If you want more of a sporting package, the 55 is a better car. I have had my 55 since '03, so you know where I stand.

Actually, the SL600 has the same sized brakes as the SL55.

The size of the rotors may be the same, but the calipers are different. The 55 has 8 piston calipers up front, and the 600s that have come through our shop have had 6 pistons up front. Both cars have 4 piston rears.

Check that Dino...

Arresting the V-12 rush are colossal disc brakes clamped by eight-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear governed by Sensotronic Brake Control, an electrohydraulic setup that modulates brake pressure at each wheel.

**EDIT**

Just talked to my tech, who has my car in front of him. He just confirmed that they both share the same braking components.

From mbusa cpo website for a 2005 SL600:

http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/cpo/mo...L&model=SL600R

Electrohydraulic 4-circuit brakes. 14.2" perforated and internally ventilated front discs with 8-piston fixed type calipers. 13.0" internally ventilated rear discs with 4-piston fixed type calipers.

From mbusa cpo website for a 2005 SL55:

http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/cpo/mo...=SL&model=SL55

AMG-enhanced 4-circuit electrohydraulic brakes. 14.17" perforated and internally ventilated front discs with AMG 8-piston fixed type calipers. 13.0" internally ventilated rear discs with AMG 4-piston fixed type calipers.

I think the only "difference" is that the AMG brakes calipers have the "AMG" written on them as opposed to "Mercedes-Benz".

A picture is worth a thousand words. My tech just pulled a wheel and snapped a pic of the brakes on my SL600. 8 pistons, two sets of pads.

Yeah but the "AMG" stamp makes the calipers feel better about themselves, so they try harder, and stop in a shorter distance.

+1... Similar to the feeling I get when I wear Magnum condoms. Scientists refer to it as the Magnun Affect.

I also suppose that it takes less paint to only paint the three letters "AMG" than "Mercedes-Benz", therefore making them lighter.

I can't believe you actually own an MB tuning Co yet still don't know SL600's were the ONLY 600 model to come standard w/AMG 55 calipers/rotors. The CL600/S600 came w/smaller 500 model braking systems (it was an EXTRA charge option on these other 600 models)

The 600's come w/special Nappa glove soft leather on every surface including special door inserts vs the AMG or other models unless special ordered, also wrong on the Suede/Alcantara headliner, it's once again STANDARD on the SL600.. Do some research before spreading all the disinformation.

Kinda like the SLR, it has AMG calipers/rotors yet labeled Mercedes Benz...

It's not the size that counts!
