Squeaking brakes return after 1,000 miles

Well at 35K and...........after 1,000 miles, $ 2,200 and a few months after the brake job......2 dealer and 2 indy shop visits..........

replacing brake pads OEM - 1X
Replacing front brake rotors with OEM rotors - 1 X
reseating OEM pads with the new rotors - 4 times
new mercedes brake paste - 3 times
machining the edges of the pads to eliminate vibration with edges - 1 time
brake quiet spray - 2X

The loud eye shattering squeal returns when car comes to a stop at a light.......of course not all the time........irritating, annoying and frustrating with any car....not just a convertible.......sounds like a trash truck....

the only thing I can think of is to replace the caliper? new pads again? or turn radio up real loud and wave to alerted people at each stop that hear the noise....

Any ideas or experience to assist with eliminating this issue..........

People reported improvement with a switch to Akebono pads, if you haven't tried that yet?

I'm in a current situation right now and I'm getting very frustrated. I have Evosport rotors paired with Akebono pads and my rear passenger side is fricken noisy, damn thing squeals like a pig at every stop. I have gone from EBC reds, Akebono's, and I'll be swapping them back to stock tomorrow. If the noise still exist my next move will be to replace the non recommended Evosport rotors. To much time and energy has gone into these things and it might be time to part.

Question Akebonos

Anyone know why the Akebonos inb general would make less noise? I imagine differnt materials......just curious if anyone knows

I am at wit's end with the OEM/OEM rotor set-up on the fronts....the pads only have 8,000 on them, the rotors less than 2,000 miles..........

To bassn..........how much were EVOsport rotors? OEM for 65 were 1,000 each list price at parts houses......I don't know if they make rotors for the SL65..I'll check the web and see if I can research, etc...any aftermarket rotors for future reference..........

Yes, It would be different rotor construction and materials that do not tend to squeal.

Another perk is that the Akebono pads have less brake dust/wheel cleaning than stock as well. Sounds like it may be worth a try at least when the stock rotors have more wear...maybe it is time for an autocross or track day to help that along

Appreciate the insight on rotors and Akebonos....

When I brake much harder, i.e. NC winding road runs so that the pads start smelling burnt or trying to reseat the pads - they get quieter, but only for a day or so.....it has been frustrating...

If I back up a few times, the nosie goes away for several stops, then returns...I was thinking the pads are not tight enough in the caliper causing vibration and the reversing of the car jams the pads back into a place that is tighter, temporarily eliminating the static vibration noise...everytime I back up this works.....maybe a good clue...

I have checked the threads on this and at least I am not alone.....the noise does make one think to get rid of the car at times.......

It is a shame since the car is such an awesome ride.......I'll run it another 6200 miles iuntil service B, see how the noise goes and change to Akebono or other pad that may be quieter than OEM....my mechanic has chamfored them, switched from one wheel to the next......I also will see if it is the caliper that is the issue with the squeeking and see if warranty will cover the part being replaced.........the warranty doesn't cover the wear items -pads or rotors, but the caliper may be covered...bet u it costs a bit......

@abiazis,

My brakes still squeak after replacing those front pads @28K miles. It happens much less often and indeed the symptoms seems very similar to yours. It's mostly in city driving when brakes aren't used much and it's usually when slowing down to a full stop from very low speed.

It doesn't bother me at all, my SA said it's pretty normal, so I gave it a rest. One of my coworkers bought the same car new, he was out for few weeks, I'll catch him next week and get his feedback.

It sure would be nice to know what is really going on... I have 2002 CL500 calipers (four piston made by Brembo) with MB OEM pads. I have tried everything, rotors, various pads, etc. Ceramic was the quietest so far. If I get get hard on the brakes a few time to really heat them the squeal goes a way for a couple of days but always returns with vengence. They just get really loud as I am coming to a complete stop. I have heard that this was a problem on some ML's that used the same calipers and pads and that MB sells a retrofit kit which is a rubber insert with lead mixed in that slides into the piston behind the pads. My local dealer could not find this part. anyone heard of it?

I replaced my stock pads with the StopTech PosiQuiet Semi-Metallic... If you like hear-piercing squeaking then go for those pads. They will turn heads too! I spent the long weekend in Vegas where I drove many times along the strip, with more embarassing than proud moments...

Any suggestions on new pads and perforated rotors?
