Question SL 65 Space Master Spare survey/question

I have been speaking with the Vredestein tire manufacturer in Holland to obtain access to the Space Master spare tire for the 2005-2011 SL 65 AMG.

The size is 175-50-19, and MBenz part number 230-400-1702.

NOTE: There is an 18 inch Space Master for the SL 55 available through dealer and parts.com.....part number 211-400-3195, but it doesn't work on 65 due to larger brakes. It is available for 55 owners if they need a spare through the dealer.

The 65 part is available in Europe for this car through Vredestein but not in the US, through their NJ headquarters warehouse. The Space Master is not sold in the US by their US branch and only can be obtained from the MB dealer according to them, which......see below....

Mercedes dealers have the part number in their parts catalogue, but it is unavailable with no units in the US....or special ordering available...

Mercedes USA will not order the item per their headquarters technical and customer service. Amazing since they still make the car for the 2011 year and the application works.

I was advised that Vredestein may make a special shipment depending on the interest.........so if any SL 65 AMG owners would like a space saver spare for an approximate price of $ 700.00, please advise.

Another option is to take firm orders to MBUSA or AMG and have them restock the part in the US and have it available through the US dealer network.

Another option is to call you local dealer and place an order for the part number and see if numbers alert them to supply this to the US. Explain to dealer that you would like to place an order without deposit to see if it is acknowledged without a backorder comment.

Thanks for response in advance as I continue on this odyssey to obtain a spare for my 65 for my longer trips........... Tire fit or fix a flat is a bad solution since it destroys the alloy rim and pressure monitoring system creating replacement costs for those items, plus the tire cost as they can't be salvaged even for a small puncture......the can also has a limited shelf life in your trunk at a cost of $ 153 to replace...

Did you give Steve @ MBenzNL a call? He can probably get it and possibly cheaper. Just another option for you.

info

I can also access the part from a Mercedes dealer in Germany for 490 euro plus shipping, waiting quotes from independent european sources that were provided by members on the board......thanks to all who assisted, as the run around from MBUSA was comical....

Sl 65 Space Master spare tire prices

$ 986.000 plus shipping from Miami to NC after Germany
$ 530 plus shipping from California to NC after Germany
$ 900 plus shipping from Germany

Still would have been easier to pick it up from dealer for $ 700.00 minus Mercedes Club discount or $ 630.00 if they still stocked the part.

That's pretty expensive. I'm not sure what you mean by "longer trips", but you do know that most space saver spares are only meant to be driven for 50 miles at 55 mph. My honest suggestion is that if you're going to be doing long trips, you buy a full size spare (even a cheap aftermarket wheel and tire) and put it in the trunk when you go on these longer trips.

Clarification - sorry..

What I meant is that I don't want to be caught in the middle of nowhere, i.e. mountain trials, etc. without a spare when I am taking a holiday or vacation trip away from home.......you are right that space savers are temporary with mile and speed limit, i.e. 50 mph, restrictions....

One time I ran over something metal in the middle of the night that I did not see at all and ripped my rear tire open on my Porsche C4S, so Tire Fit would have been useless and a flatbed was probably hours away......I was 30 miles from a main road in NC mountains at the time...

Having a space saver spare that time, gave me piece of mind knowing I could go on my way after the change, saved me time and money, and I was able to get somewhere near civilization about 100 miles away.....and get a new tire.....I deflated the spare and tucked it back in the trunk...used it one more time with that car and it still worked perfectly.......

Abiazis, Here are photos of the spare...

I finally dragged the wheel out.... Took some photos...

There is a dealer order tag from Massapequa NY with different part number then on the wheel 230 400 1702 the wheel has 230 400 2702?

Thanks Black CLK500 - I think I have several good sources now and am down to price. I file this info in case.

EXECMALIBU - thanks for taking the trouble to pull the spare.....I read the inside of the wheel which was VERY helpful and that confirmed the 6.5X19 inch and ET 14 which is the info I am getting from Vredestein, European suppliers and Mercedes Europe dealers....I saw the last 4 digits of PN being 2702 on rim but 1702 on order ticket....interesting...

Thanks for all your help!!

Have you confirmed that your stock wheel will even fit into the trunk to be able to swap to a spare? I doubt my current wheels could even wedge under the convertible top shelf in the trunk!

Flat tire...

Last time it happened with my Porsche when I used the space saver, I just bagged the flat tire and placed it on the front passenger seat.

Luckily my wife was not with me and I didn't have to have her hold it in her lap.

Please keep us posted as to the fitting result and post the dealer info, if they're ok with it.

Lists as a 18x8.5 wheel; I guess they figured out a way to make the 18" fit after all? Or is this only for cars with the 6-pot front brakes?

EDIT: Are you sure about this p/n? I found this eBay auction with the same number: http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Mercedes...-/200487488793

Sl 65 Spare received from NLBenz parts house

I received this from the Netherlands(BenzNL) with the part number stamped on the wheel as 230-401-27-02 ( Karl G. - made mistake on this # on last post - sorry) which Vredestein, the manufacturer advised was 19 inch, per photo attached it is a 19 inch tire, but the shipping invoice attached to the tire was part # 230-400-17-02........see all photos attached for tire size, part numbers, shipping sticker per info provided above.......

May be a different part number for 2005/6 SL 65 due to 8 pot calipers in front to clear....versus reduction to 6 in the front in following years......don't know for sure....I spoke with V-stein directly on part number confusion after they advised me originally it was 1702..maybe both numbers work?

It's not the spare that needs fitting; it's the flat rear tire that you replace with the spare - where do you put *that* tire?

Unfortunately in the car......hopefully with no passenger aboard.....happened to me in my Porsche when I got a flat......temporary inconvenience.....

If you have a passenger, have to strap to the roof I guess.....I have stuff in the car to do that if needed.......

Stuff in the trunk leave it open and leave it at a service station until you can retrieve it. just an option.

SL65 Spare

I have been following this thread and will ask a possibly stupid question but I am just curious. Didn't the SL65's come with a spare. My 08 has one under the floor of the trunk euipped with straps, jack, wheel wrench an onboard air compressor. Was this an option or an after market add on?
