The question of the 7 speed transmission is an interesting one.
Here are my thoughts:
Facts:
The new 7 speed will be out by fall '03 which by German standards will be '04 models.
The transmission is designed for up to 700 NM torque, which happens to be the SL55 torque.
Assumption:
Mercedes will not be able to afford to have their premium V8 models (the 55's) with a 5 speed transmission, even if it has faster shifting, while the lower V8 E, S, CL & SL models have a cutting edge 7 speed one. I assume a delay with AMG, but if only a short one...

Between those two I would vote brilliant silver/berry red. Since you live in Florida I can see why white would be tempting though. Can't lose either way since white is less common so your car would be more unique. On the other hand, adding the berry red (of which I am a major fan) will make your brilliant silver unique too.
I did note when I did an internet search last fall that up here in the northland white new bodied (R230) SL's can be slow sellers and usually get discounted when resold. Lline up a dozen different colored SL's and somehow the lines on the new model SL just don't seem to be as complimentary for a white one as they were on the old bodied SL's. (I think it has something to do with less chrome incorporated into the new design, as otherwise chrome really compliments a white bodied vehicle more so than any other color. When the chrome is gold plated on a white vehicle it is especially stunning as you see on many of the tricked out Lexus's on the road.)
