SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: SL 55 - harmonic balancer
I’m started to learn about the SL 55 and come across this ”harmonic balancer” thing one shall have a look out for – actually, with every service MB have to check this. It is stated that robber bond can decay and works its way into the timing cover coursing havoc!
I have been at my local MB (small town) and they can (at this point) not say/show me what/where this ”harmonic balancer” is located.
I have two pictures; one of the Timing Case and one of Camshaft and Chain Drive and would appreciate help to pin point the little devil
….. my guess it’s no. 23 on the Camshaft and Chain Drive picture.Cheers and by the way - I'm new here

We call it a crank pulley. Mercedes calls it a "Harmonic Balancer." It's the large pulley in the center low front of the Mercedes V8 Kompressor block. It's also the pulley tuners replace as part of their packages. A larger crank pulley increases supercharger turns and therefore produces more power. Sometimes, they'll begin to reprogram the ECU to play with fuel/air mix, etc. But the short answer is, be careful here. But that's the Harmonic balancer -- the large front central crank pulley.
My indy is a tuner and has offered to have a new one custom cnc from aluminum, to replace mine. Maybe make it slightly bigger, but not big enough to create problems or need additional work (maybe 50hp gain at the crank). When your belts squeal prematurely, it's because the "harmonic balancer" is starting to wobble (that "rubber" they mentioned). I know, why put such a cheap material at such a critical place? This pulley turns constantly, and when you look under the hood, you'll know which one I'm talking about. My dealer replaced all other pulleys and belts under warranty (trying to fix that squeal), but they wouldn't do the crank pulley (Harmonic Balancer -- $1100 part). We can have the aluminum one custom made for $500 (all aluminum, no rubber), so why not?
Obviously, if I finally decide to do this mod, I'll report back to this group.
Hope this helps.
