SL55/63/65/R230 AMG: No SLR Convertible!

Automobilwoche / May 12, 2003
STUTTGART -- Mercedes-Benz has postponed a decision on whether to build a convertible version of the SLR super-sports car.
The SLR is assembled at McLaren in Woking, England. Prices start at 360,000 euros.
Beside technical difficulties, the marketing of such a car would also cause problems: It is not clear yet how to position a SLR with 600hp alongside the 500hp AMG version of the Mercedes SL.
A company spokesman told Automobilwoche that a SLR roadster was "not planned." "

all of the preliminary info from benz corporate so far has called the SLR, " SLR McClaren coupe", NO mention of a roadster!!

They have been saying for almost a year that they were only building the coupe
The press release of 12 March 2003 makes it official.

If everyone in the world knew that there was not going to be a SLR Roadster there would be no press release at this late date. Evidently, there must have been some interest in the SLR Roadster and a decision made not to build it and to "officially" say it will not be built.
Every car is a concept until it goes into production. DUH!
I don't think some of you read what you post. Damien and JCO posted like there has never been a concept of a SLR roadster in anyway shape or form and that it was a figment of 'my' imagination. Like the Roadster was never considered or a concept built and that the SLR Roadster was like the Loch Ness Monster.
Next time don't belittle something someone posted just for information's sake and take into consideration that more people than you may have been interested.

Bullsh*t. How can you even put the SL55 and the SLR side-by-side? They are different cars altogether. I think that MB is really saying that they cannot market the SLR coupe along with a SLR Roadster. Who would rather have a coupe over a convertable than can be transformed into a coupe? Bad move...

If no mention of a Roadster there would be no concept car built and displayed at the Geneva Auto Show.

Who is "they" and why would 'they' need a press release on May 12, 2003 if the information was already household knowledge or a year old.
Lighten up, Guys!
I'm not blind....only that it was ONLY a concept car....
It is obvious that they made concepts of both the SLR coupe and roadster...and now as you pointed out, have "officially" decided to only build the coupe for now.....all I am saying is that it has been an "unofficial rumour" for some time that MB/Mclaren had decided not move forward with the roadster version....I will see if I can't find the article....I imagine it is an issue of engineering costs...a roadster would require very different tub design.
by the way did you guys see the video on Auto Express:

...i actually have a client who has, since 1998, had a deposit for a roadster.
