Aftermarket steering wheel for SL55

Where can I buy a SL55 thicker steering wheel with bird's eye maple? Mail order? From who? Does it have to be custom made? How long will it take? I ordered one from a local vendor and still have yet to see it.

Thanks.

I understand that the steering wheel from the SL500 will fit the SL55, and I know that these wheels are available in wood. If you get the MB wheel, you might be able to re-use the airbag unit, which will result in a considerable ($1,000+) savings, but I'm not sure of this.

The drawback to using the SL500 wheel is that you lose the gear selection buttons on the back of the wheel, but my experience is that I rarely use them, since I can get exactly the same effect on gear selection by moving the gearshift knob itself from side to side.

There is also the Formula 1 SL55 steering wheel available. Pics of it are on the AMG owners website posted by Ronald. He has the wheel on his car and it looks very nice.

I know they are out there, but I want to get one ASAP without a 4 to 6 week wait. Performance products have them in stock, but not in bird's eye maple and not for SL55 (no buttons for gear shifting).

Yes - I looked at the AMG owner's forum. It's quite large and has numerious posts. None that I saw were obviously what I was looking for, and downloading them all is quite a task. Any chance you could post the URL for the post in question?

The Multi Media Gallery leads to photos, etc. of various cars, arranged by model. The SL section contains 45 photos, a few of which appear to be photos of a normal SL55 wheel. Am I missing something? If so, A URL (like this: https://mbworld.org/forums/newreply....threadid=39423) would make things much easier.

I'm going to try to get Ben here, Evosport sells a very VERY nice looking steering wheel that can be custom made to almost anything and last i heard Kleemann also hacked the software to allow the shifting paddles.

You wanna save alot of money and time getting your steering wheel done in Alcantara of any color?
Here's what I'm thinking of doing.....looking at the photo of the red steering wheel with carbon fibre it doesn't look like it would be too difficult for an upholsterer to take the alcantara and sew it around the same areas and leave your normal steering wheel alone in the other areas. This will also give you a thicker steering wheel and better grip for your hand.
Alcantara costs $67 a yard from the US distributor- Gulf Fabrics at 813-875-2707
I'm also thinking about using the excess which I'm sure out of a yard there will be, to do the instrument cluster. I have berry red leather and of course the dash and steering wheel is black, so this will break things up a bit more and match the red/ black on the shift knob also.

I am able to get the F1 steering wheel for the R230 (as well as other available models). But I guess you are all aware that its not DOT approved.

Yes, it is.

A list of all models for which safety car style steering wheels are available, can be found here:

Your an idiot...

Mr. Joro- You would actually think about getting 22 inch wheels on your SL55? Remember an SL55 is for performance and is a bahn-burner, not a fashion statement!! I think that 20" wheels are already to big for the car and 19" is more like it. Let me guess your gonna get full chrome to? I got an idea, give your car to someone who understands what it's all about!!

Unbeleivable!

Cheers.

22s? good luck fitting them. 21s are do-able. but obviously if you get anyhting bigger than 20 it wont be a brand like brabus or lorinser..... thats not too good of an idea.
