SL63 vs Ferrari
I was looking to buy an old Porsche 928 when out of the corner of my eye
I saw something beautiful.
It was a Ferrari 575 Marinello, black with light tan interior. Now I have always
loved the shape of this car. It had just been sold for 69k a 2004 with 9k miles
on the clock, YES 9. Now I could buy that with my SL and have change!
The trouble is I really love my SL and would I be making a mistake. The sales
guy says their comfortable and drives his one to Italy every year.
Anybody had any experience of 550's or 575's , ride, comfort and of course
how fast. Anything would be appreciated.

The Maranello is a beautiful car. As much as i love MB's If i had to choose, i would probably take the Ferrari. Did i understand correctly, the salesman has a 575?

Forget the 550 in my opinion - your looking at a 575 - although this is my least liked Ferrari of all of them (besides the scaglietti which in my opinion isn't even a Ferrari) they can be made to go very quick - to be honest if one of your preconditions in looking for a Ferrari is its comfort your in the wrong market - this isn't to say they are uncomfortable but they just don't have it on the list of high priorities.
I happen to test drive a SL63 and don't advise you going to a 575 - the SL63 is an incredible machine and encompasses every facet of what a true car enthusiast is after. I honestly think you will notice a massive step down in all levels of performance and technology going to a 575.

The Ferrari will always pull more tail and get more attention than the Benz ... but it will always be an inferior car, too - so it all depends on whether you bought the car to drive it or be seen in it.

Exactly - but if your after skirt - then get a 360 or 430, heck even a 355 has more sex appeal I would say than a 575.

comfort? Not as much as the SL.
Ride? One fun a$$ car to drive.
Speed? Fast, real fast. Before modding the 55, the 575 would literally rip the SL55 in half .. it still does uptil today when you floor it from zero, but right after the SL gets some traction, goodbye mr.ferrari.
From the collection we have, i have to say the 575 is one of the best. Classic look, beautiful in every way, maintanance? Well if you dont treat the F car like a go kart it wont kill you. For example, the brakes of the car were changed almost a year ago, and yes i do track the car regularly. the ONLY thing i'd have to say is the gearbox (im comparing this to newer Fcars), just a bit slow (still faster than the SL55's though :P)
If I were you, i'd go for it

The 550/575 cars are great GT cars, and frankly at their current price point, a fabulous ownership proposition.
You will probably miss the SL's roof, but it will be more than made up for in quality. And forget the 'attracting women' BS. I have been a Ferrari owner for near on 30 years, and most women don't give them a second glance. The ones that do, are the ones you need to stay away from. The only people you really 'meet' are 9-14 year old boys. Scary, but true. If you were a little creepy, just about any Ferrari could work. Fortunately, I am not creepy! (At least that's what my wife tells me)!

I drove a friend's 348 in the Grove (Miami) and literally had girls walk over from the Johnny Rockets to hand me their phone numbers. They may not be the kind of girls you want a relationship with, but they were DEFINITELY the kind of girls that (at 20 years old) I wanted to meet.

I've had the car disease all my life. I've owned seven V12 Ferraris, probably 10 high end Mercedes, Lamborghinis, Turbos, etc. I love the Maranello series cars, but I drive an SL55 right now. The real question I think is what are you going to use the car for? If it's a daily driver, stick with the 63. Not so much that the Ferrari will eat you out of house and home (although it might), but because in the US you can't give away a Ferrari with 35,000 miles on it. Look no further than your own example.....9K miles and worth, what was it, $62K? Great car though.

oh oh now I am really confused and thanks Dino for stirring my
loins. When I had my SL55 I had a race with either a 550 or 575 couldn't
see the front cos it left me standing. If you look on Drag times the 575
looks slow well slower than a SL55 and a SL63 so perhaps it was
tuned. Your right I would miss the roof, sunny to day. It's that incredible
backside the Ferrari has, I wish the SL had bigger haunches, but the car is still beautiful.
So it has to be a test drive, then a very tough decision.

Personally, I'd take the SL, because i know I can drive it on a cross country tour if i wanted... the Ferrari i would be a little afraid it would breakdown on me...

So...... you are a rear end man?
One of my favorite things to do (with my clothes on), is buy a car across the country, fly in and drive home. My most memorable trips have been in Ferrari's:
Testarossa from Menomenee, MI to PHX
Mondialt cab from Buffalo, NY to PHX
F40 from Los Angeles to PHX
All have been dead reliable.

I too am a rear end man (absolutely no homo). I can also vouch for their reliability I bought mine across the country (about 1500km) and drove it home, was magic. I ended up putting 47,000 km on it before I sold it - never missed a beat.
