Cool highway sound

I went for a nice drive last night with the roof down for the first time. My buddy was driving his new sl500 (which is very nice also by the way) with the roof down also and when we were on the highway we were playing around a bit. He tells me the sound of the 55 under acceleration on the highway is the sweetest sound he has ever heard. I found it nice from inside and didn't realize that it would be so noticable to other drivers. Today i will switch cars with him so i can hear it myself.

Loving the car more and more every day and have had no problems whatsoever with it so far.

Agree with that. The SL55 is not my daily driver but each time I drive it, I marvel at the overall competence of the package and that feeling is still fresh after 8 months of ownership. The SL55 has to rank as one of the most complete cars ever made - design, technology, performance, driving pleasure.

Agree, but the R230 generally is such a complete car.

SWMBO and I drove hood down from Newquay to Padstow along the Atlantic coast in Cornwall last night - 20 deg, sun setting, Padstow full as we cruised through the town.

Had wolf whistles for either the car or the wife, (or me if Rick Stein's cliental are essentially gay), and comments from everyone on the waterfront. (That car won't be no good down cornish lanes, me handsome!) .

This car looks the part but is such a nice ride - no buffetting, quiet, a class act.

Envy you guys in the SL55, but for me this is as good as a car gets.....

Could'nt agree more with your mate. Took my 9yr old boy out on Fri evening for a blast in the lotus 340R (190 bhp , weighs nothing , noisey titanium exhaust , great toy) with the wife bringing up the rear in the SL55. She let it rip past us on a piece of dual carriageway , and WHAAAAAAAAAAAAH !!! It sounds fantastic. A noise to die for.

I like the Volvo V70R and S60R - oh, and the AMG SL55 or SL65
Well, I agree, the SL55 has got to have one of the sweetest exhaust sounds of any MB ever.

I have shown the famous clip of Lonman (Robbie from London) gunning his SL55 while friends in an S4 (?) from the Nogaro team were filming alongside at roughly 80mph (130-140kmh) ... what a sound. The best part of that clip was the reaction of the folks on board the S4 - itself being a car that deserves respect.

There's no intro forum here, so I may as well post it here... I've been lurking here (and elsewhere on the MB / BMW / Audi / Volvo sites on the net) for quite a while now, err over a year.

I have (legal due to business) access to plenty of decent bandwidth hosting space... we also have some pretty good digital video production and post facilities so... if anyone has an SL55 in the eastern Canada region (Toronto -> Quebec corridor) I'd be more to have some video shot and hosted It'd be a pretty cool idea, no? Nothin' illlegal just some cool SL55 material.

Any interest - please PM me here.

Rob

Please tell me more about the 340R. I was thinking of a Lotus Elise for the weekends when it is released here. Not quite a 340R, but I'd like to hear your experiences just the same.

Justin,

I originally had a Mk1 Elise with a 160hp upgrade. Great car , brakes , sweet handling , still could handle more power. So bought a 340R as soon as they released them. Elise chassis , much lighter (no roof or doors , completely impractical) , 190hp , 0-60 in around 4 secs , go-kart handling , looks totally radical. You can see kids mouthing "WOW" as you drive past ! Always gets smiles and thumbs-ups , and when the sun shines there's not much more fun you can have with your clothes on !
They only made 340 of them worldwide , and quite a few have been broken in the 3 years since release , so you might find it difficult to even see one in the flesh , let alone drive/buy one. But if you do get the opportunity , they are something else.
Look at www.340R.net for more info. There's also a very active yahoo e.group for 340R's , where owners swap info on spare parts , technical stuff , track days , insurance deals etc.

You won't go far wrong with an Elise. Let us know how you get on.

David

PS Hope we don't get told off for talking about non-SL55 cars on this forum !!

My only two concerns are a) difficulty of driving and b) maintenance. I have been driving understeering cars my entire (albeit inexperienced and short) life. On my favorite canyon road, I can just imagine coming around a tight turn and OOPS, the rear swings around. I have also never owned a car with a manual transmission, but I learn quickly. Maintence wise, this is no SL55 (see how I bring it back on topic so quickly). My C32 is a daily driver, so I dislike having to give it to my dealer for a few days. However, as these other little cars are just weekend toys, I'm willing to accept some difficulties.
