SL55 Production Question

I've had my deposit down for 04 SL55, and my dealer told me that I've been placed for the 03 model, where the production starts in July, and that I'll get my car in Aug.
I don't know if it sounds right, b/c I'd rather get a 04 model if there is only a few months difference.

My question is that, is anyone here has an order placed for '04 SL55?
when is the production date for it?
I thought 04 model are supposed to be built around Summer (starts around July).

Sincerely,

Thanx in advance for the feedback

Well, according to the rumours, (see other threads) the SL55 could be an SL65 for the 04 model year - so its quite possible the dealer wants you to take it before the model year ends.

I don't think its true, but check with him - you might be better off getting the 65 if its even just a few months later and cost 10K more....

i think the rumors of flat-out replacement of the 55 with a 65 are specious conjecture.

we don't even have confirmation that we'll see 65s in the US. no way they'd kill the 55 and then not be able to deliver 65s into the states.

maybe both, but simultaneously, not a replacement.

doody.

55s and 600s will continue to be sold for many years to come. The 65 is merely a "special edition" that has to be special ordered. It's not going to take the place of the production 55s.

Discontinued SL55! I speculated NO!

Mercedes is trying to disparately to separate the McLaren built SLR from the SL55 and to put a bigger engine in the SL with more HP would really hurt the case for justifying the SLR.

Mystery solved?

It may well be that certain US dealers will only now bring in the SL65 once it becomes available. This follows from the magical logic of allocation and maximizing dealer profits. Let's say you are a dealer with an allocation of 4 SL55's for 2004. You can sell each of those for $20,000.00 net profit to your deallership apiece. You also have the option of "upgrading" your allocated 4 SL55's to SL65's which will bring a net profit to your dealership of $35,000 each. It does not take a rocket scientist to see why the SL55 will fast become a disappearing breed, especially since the SL600 remains available to fill the demands of those customers who want more power than the SL500, but don't need the full blown power of the SL65.

SLR vs SL55

I have placed an official order for an SLR. The literature (VERY nice carbon fibre brochure!) claims at least 600 HP and a weight of 1400 kg. They are positioning the car as a lighter, carbon fibre version of the SL55. In fact, the brochure states "imagine an SL55 weighing 800 pounds less." The absense of a convertble top probably saves 100 pounds alone. Final specs. will be released in Geneva in September, when production will begin. As an SL55 owner, I will get privileged allocation.

MRI Doc, if possible please post some pics and literature from that carbon fiber bound brouchure. Did you read about the person putting up $100k over MSRP for the right to buy a SLR. Was that you? Thanks.

rumors rumors rumors, speculation speculation speculation....that is all that has been said about the SL65 and all of it worthless. How long did it take for MB to change the previous body style SL? About 12 years or so? And now after only 2 or 3 years they are going to discontinue the SL55 for the SL65??? Please......stop spreading rumors. NOBODY KNOWS!!

Yes, it is all rumor and speculation, but I think you have misread something. No one is saying that the SL or R230 or the SL55 is being discountined altogether only "reengined" to bigger engine for the AMG model. That is what I read into this rumor.

Your post about the 12 year run on the R129 is moot when considering an engine upgrade from 55 to 65. This is a rumor of new engine not demise of the SL chassis. Therefore if this does happen, which I doubt, the SL55 would be discontinued just as the SL300 and E420 were both discontinued and replaced with SL320 and E430, respectively.

just to clarify - the "replacement" scenario, silly as it may be, has indeed been discussed here, or at least referenced from here (it started in another thread).

MRI Doc,

The SLR will be a fantastic car and congratulations on the deposit! BTW, are you going to Spain for the driving event?

SLR Brochure

I had to return the brochure to the dealer. The specs in the brochure were preliminary and a separate letter from MB hinted that HP would exceed 600. We will all know in September.

i would wait for the SL65. it seems like there replacing an already magnificant automobile and making it beyond comparable. this one will beat the ferrari's no doubt. if you dont want the 65 take the 55 now becuase the 65 will be really $$$.
happy choosing.
