Kill story with my SL55

Today on the way to work. I was pulling out of the Circle K after getting a Coffee. Along comes this new Camaro SS flying down the road. I jump on it and catch up with him at the light, Except I was behind him. Be both make a left hand turn on to a 4 lane wide open road. Thats when I got DESTROYED! This Camaro was so damn fast I couldn't catch him. There was a point where I thought I was maintaining and he wasn't pulling, but he was a good ways ahead.

Needless to say I was shocked. I mean I got some mods and my car is not slow at all. Its just this Camaro SS way insane. It sounded insane and I moved like no ones business. I eventually gave up because I wasn't catching this car. I was totally impressed, and a little pissed at my heavy SL. As soon as I got to the shop I was. I started searching for a new car to buy. CTS-V? GT-R? C63? SL65?

talk about a slice of humble pie. Time for some more mods I guess. Hats off to the people who built that Camaro is was by far the fastest one I've ever seen.

Definitely a bigger tuner market for GM, e.g. here's the HPE page for Camaro SS's: http://www.hennesseyperformance.com/hpe1000camaro.html

That is the thing. This Camaro is defenitley a high horsepower engine, but I wonder how it would differ from lets say a roll of 60 MPH?

I'm pretty sure you will change your mind about your SL55

By the way How much horsepower is your 55 modded to?

We had an SL55 modded to 700 horsepower, I raced a mustang which was rated @ 850 horsepower.

From Zero it easily boosts ahead of me, but once we rolled from 60-65 mph it didnt pull that much and I managed to overtake it.

On a Dyno Dynamics i make 500whp and 600wtq give or take a few. So thats whats amazing about that Camaro. Its not every day you run into a high HP car with your morning coffee sitting in the cup holder. Maybe I'm discounting my car a little. The guy did jump on before me, we was ahead of me. As we took the left turn at the intersection we were in the same lane and I was behind him.

I do remember a slight hesitation on my part, as I I was assessing the road a head for traffic. IDK I feel as if that car was faster. However, I was thinking... If it was my brothers CLS55 would that Camaro have still won? My brother's CLS makes the same power as my car, maybe a touch more? but its lighter.

Needless to say I'd love to meet that cat at the strip with my slicks on. Then see whats what.

Keep in mind that it takes an awful lot of HP to catch and then pass another fast car, if it gets the jump, even if you have the faster car. The distance needed to do this, grows exponentially, the longer your reaction time to his jump.

Not working with hard numbers here, but...

I have a low 11 second car. If I happen upon a low 12 second car, that's gets a 2 second jump on me, I'm gonna need over 1/2 mile to catch him. But if we were to run from a dig, and leave at the same time, it's no contest, assuming we both hook up.

RE: Camaro

Some of the new GM cars are plenty fast out of the box, and they can easily be modded to make a lot more power. Ditto for the new Mustangs. Neither will ever be a Benz though.

I'm with Clayton in that it takes a lot of real estate to catch another fast car if they get a meaningful jump before you hit it.

My most recent adventure: I toyed with a guy in a Dinan M6 the other day, kind of a squirrel who cut me off for absolutely no reason, probably thought I had an SL500. He then took off in front of me, about a half second ahead of me, from the light. I hit it, and by 70 I was ON his bumper, all the way up to 145, had to let off slightly several times to avoid hitting him. I stayed ON his bumper until we had to slow down at a 4-way stop. No question whatsoever as to who had the faster car.

He turned off, embarassed, and then somehow managed to find me at the gas station several minutes later pumping gas; pulled up and asked "exactly what kind of Mercedes is that?". I smiled and told him it's a V12. His response: "man that is one fast car" and then took off like a banshee. Have not seen him again. Love my V12 sleeper.

my neighbor just got one of the first 2SS camaro drop tops...it's a cool ride indeed but it's a really big car, and a little more crude and unrefined for what I thought...I like the headlights and some of the accents ... the car is massive for what it is, and uses a ton of plastic shod and throwback colors, retro steering wheel (deeeep dish) kinda funky in there...

The new Camero has a good throwback shape but the proportions are wrong. Same with the Challenger. They both look awkwardly large when you get close to them. Seems like the hoods are at least 6 inches too high. The Mustang is a little better, but still larger than it needs to be.

Perhaps it is all due to new DOT regulations that they didn't have to worry about in 1969.

For a weekend I had a friends SRT-8 Challenger . It had headers, intake and a tune. Even with those power adders it was a pig. It felt very bulky. Not sure how the new Camaro feels, but the leather looks good. I think you are spot on, they are both large cars.

The camaro is in fact a nice car... but with the sl55 - overall the camaro cant touch it... I think its more than just the intial speed...
