New Member + SL65 AMG Brake Help

Good Afternoon All

My name is Martyn and I recently joined up here after buying an SL65, is an 04 car in silver with grey leather. Have had it a couple of weeks and really love the car especially the mad torque.

The car is at the dealer having a check over and for them to sort a clicking noise from a front brake disc.

The clicking noise has been sourced to a worn anti-rattle spring within one of the front discs. The service guy is telling me that 1) the spring cannot be removed from the disc to be replaced and 2) these springs cannot be procured separately anyway.

Does anyone know if the above is correct please?

So consequently they are saying it needs a new disc + pads on one side because of the above, am conscious given the cost of these monster discs that am not getting taken for a ride !!

Also, they are saying it would be fine to change the defective front disc and leave the other existing disc as no problems with it. Is it ok to mix new and old discs on the same axle?

Thank you for your help

Hello,

Is your car an '04 or '05? My understanding is the AMG Bi-turbo V12 was available beginning with the '05 model year, at least here in the states. Regardless, yes SL65 rotors are spendy but if you search around for whole sale prices I know you can find them for less than $800/rotor which is better than dealer pricing. Sorry I don't have a link handy, I'm on a different computer right now.

I can't speak to 1) but I would presume the springs are not available separately as your service guy mentioned and if you are going to replace the rotor, replace both simultaneously otherwise the car will pull to one side, towards the new rotor, if your current rotor is worn down; what is the mileage on the car? Nice picture btw.

If you need to purchase a new one try parts.com. Cheaper then the dealer.

Cheers for the replies.

The car was registered in 2004 for sure, this was the launch year in Europe.

The motor has done 45k miles and the rotor is a little worn but does not have a pronounced lip.

I spoke with the service manager of the dealer last night and turns out the other chap is new and basically clueless. The service manager is finding out the proper situation and calling Monday to discuss and give me the proper facts.

Welcome to the forum!

Also be aware that the fasteners are known to come loose on those AMG two piece wheels and when that happens they make a clicking noise. Just an FYI incase that spring is not the issue.

Great looking SL65 btw!

Collected my car yesterday and all is sorted, the dealer upped their game the last few days and overall I am happy.

Upon arrival to the dealership I was shown to the car still on the ramps and spoke with the helpful AMG master tech working the motor plus shown the defective disc. The rattling in this disc under braking was caused by wear in the many bracket / mounting pieces where the little bolts pass through on the 2 piece disc / hub interface. AMG say these bolts should not be retorqued once wear occurs in the brackets hence a new pair of discs required.

Was an expensive exercise to have them changed but am content the work was necessary.
