Throttle Body Question.

My car is a early 2003, (possibly made in 2002) I am wanting to replace my throttle body in order to gain more power, when my independent MB garage checked against a 2006 model which should have a larger one, the part number is the same! I read somewhere that some of the very early SL55's had larger throttle bodies but MB made them smaller in order to reduce the HP as the output were higher that quoted.
Does this seem correct?

^^^^ Good Question, where did you find the part number for your current one? Did you call the MB dealer and give them your VIN?

Yes thats exactly what I did and they cross checked it with the VIN for a 2006 model and they both had the same part numbrers.

Thanks for the reply

From what I understand some early 03's had the 80mm - you have been kissed on the d!ck if you have one!

I heard this as well. Also heard some discussion about troubles in the U.S. with emissions and the 80 TB which led to the 78. I thought most of the European delivered SLs had the 80 though. I actually run a European 80 on my SL.

Did yours come stock with an 80 or did you install it. If the latter what were the power gains and did you feel a noticeable difference?

cheers

I replaced the stock 78 with an 80. Like everything else I did, the mod was in combo with something else. In this case it was shorty headers. I can tell you the combo shaved 3 tenths off my best ET. The butt dyno said a bit more throttle response and the car pulled harder in general. I already had a pulley tune and HE prior to the 80 tb and headers.

bigger tb alone will result in worse throttle response at low /mid rpms... only at high rpms you might see some improved power...

Yeah, I thought I had heard that before, maybe the headers helped or you just can't trust the butt my track numbers did improve though.

03 SL55 AMG
Greetings. I know I already made a thread but this topic also shares the same concern of throttle bodies...

So I'm going to post my VIN number and see if anyone can decode it and tell me if I have the 80mm AMG TB or not. Mine's also an early 03 but American spec.
