Very cool.

Wonder what the relationship with Aston-Martin is yielding, speaking of bespoke Cars with V12s?

I would also support a natural gas car or Gwagen since it looks like the 18 wheelers are beginning to come online thanks to Boone Pickens.

This is almost verbatom from what a top US AMG marketing guy told me when I was at the AMG Driving Academy in September. But note they don't say there will be a V12 SL. With the new SL rumored to be built on top of the E-class chassis I think it is safe to say there won't be a V12 SL in the future.

I was told by an AMG rep about a year ago that there would be a V12 SL. I think the decision is based on profit.......the V12 premium is pretty hefty. The V12 option has always been available for the S and SL class......I would expect the same path.

I can't wait for the new V12 lineup ...

The current lineup is Dinausor-era 3 valves per cylinder engines.

My pick for the new lineup is :

600 : 5,5 48 Valves direct injection, twin turbo V12 producing 550 Horsepower.

65 AMG : 6.0 _________________________________________670 Horsepower.

Re: New V12 Engines

Great news. MB is obviously going to continue selling what we want and not just capitulate to the environmentalists.

In the interim, I'll continue roaming the streets in my 700 ft lb/600 HP "dinosaur era 3 valve V12".

C'mon, the current V12 engines are awesome, but much looking forward to the new technology as it will undoubtedly be even better.

I didn't want to disrepect the Current V12 engines in any way ... They are awesome torque monsters...

I just wanted to say they start to be a lil' old...

Old compared to what? Show me a modern American engine. The pushrod V8 in GM's line up dates back to the 60's at least. Just because it is not a totally ground up new block does not mean it is old. I believe there is a lot of modern tech on the current V12's. For instance, the computer uses the spark plug not only to ignite the air-fuel mixture, but as a sensor for combustion chamber conditions. Twin turbos with air-water intercoolers, some exotic materials in the block and heads, etc. I think their output and reliability records speak for themselves. I'll bet the reason they are looking to update is more dependent on emissions or reducing manufacturing cost rather than performance or longevity.

There is nothing wrong or bad with the current v12s. They already make the most power the chassis can cope with and then some. Any development will be heard towards lower emissions, but that is about it methinks.

I don't have any facts, but in my opinion there won't be a V12 in the new SL for the following reasons:
  1. They could put one in now but they don't.
  2. The MSRP of the SL65 is higher than a SLS. Who's going to pay more for a new SL65 and get hit with 1/2 depreciation in 3 years rather than buy a SLS that would hold its value?
  3. The 2012 SL is rumored to be built on the E-class chassis. The V12 may not fit in the engine bay.
  4. The SL is no longer the premiere roadster in the MB lineup. Its now the E-class of their 2 seater lineup. Sure, the SLS is limited production, but so was the SL600 and SL65.
  5. They can produce enough HP and torque from the new 5.5V8TT to lead the SL's market segment. Put the new 5.5V8TT in a <4000lbs chassis and its going to be a rocket.
