Side vent removal on Sl55?
Had no luck in the R230 forum so thought i'd try here!!
I'm currently vinyl wrapping my SL500 and want to remove the side vents on the front wings, I see 2 Torx bolts that unbolt but they touch the plastic outer mesh when undone so far. Are there any other bolts etc from the inside that need to be removed to get them out?
Thanks

No bolts from the inside. The wings are held on with 2 sided tape. After you loosen the torx bolts, use fishing line or dental floss to run between the wings and fender to cut the tape. When you reinstall them, put new 2 sided tape on them. The correct type, size and color (grey/black not white) tape is available from a car paint store.

Wish I could take credit for it, but another member posted it awhile back. I just thought it would be easier than telling you to "do a search". I took mine off to paint them satin black since I have a black car. The floss seemed to work the best, but with heavier fishing line, it might be better. Good luck.

You are going to love it how much easier it is to keep it clean, specially after black paint. Just wash it and wipe it dry. No more water spots, swirls, waxing, polishing, etc. Just rinse, dry, and drive.

Edit, I just now noticed you have a funny looking license plate. I'm guessing you are not in US , so shipping would be very costly. Another good reason to list your location in your profile info.

cfoster, thanks for the photos. Your SL is going to look swweet. I know you are going to want to change out those wheels. B Rs wheels would look nice. Matte white, chrome and black is a great combo.

may I ask what you were quoted for the wrap job? I am thinking of wrapping... but then do all the little trim pieces have to come off?

Thanks for the wheel offer but I live in the UK and think shipping would be horrendous?!!
erichen - I'm a signwriter by trade so am doing it myself! Stripping it back as much as possible is the easiest way of doing it, its the finishing off that really shows.
Pomppe - what do you use to clean it? I used to use car shampoo then a towel on my old matt black Audi so would I do the same on the white?!
Thanks

The manufacturer of 3M di-noc wrap says, that You can take to the car-wash too, but I have always washed my car by hand. The hot wax in the car-wash is a BIG NO NO.
