The new SL63 AMG was revealed in Barcelona today by Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher.

What is the purpose of the LEDs in the rear diffusor? Additional brake light or backup light?

Don't know for sure but maybe....
Don't know for sure yet about those lower rear LED lights, but maybe they could possibly be for the new feature for where you can now swipe your foot underneath the rear bumper and as long as you have the keyfob with you, the trunk lid will automatically open for you.....for the times when both your hands are full of stuff and you can't reach into your pocket for the keyfob or open the trunk with your other hand.....
Could that be what it is?
IMHO, I really like the picture of the red SL 63 from the back...looks wide, low, powerful, high-tech, menacing, elegant all at the same time.... :-)

Notice how the hood no longer extends to the grill. I suspect this is part of the pedestrian safety requirements that is affecting all new car designs. The fact that the bumper cover is now wrapped over the top allows for a softer material to be used at the potential pedestrian impact location.
