Trade in value SL 65 AMG on Porsche 991

I test drove the new Porsche 991 Carrera S yesterday.....

Nice car.....

I asked what the trade-in value on my very clean 2005 SL65 AMG with 43,000 miles would be on the 911, if I were to buy it this week.........

Took them a day to come up with $ 33K........

KBB, etc trade-in... is in the mid 50's.......

To say the least, I responded with an instantaneous laugh.....

Anybody else explored trade-in value on their 65 on another car?

I would never trade an SL65 to a Porche... never. SL it's much more a better car.... and look 10 times better than an Porsche...

Since I bought the 65 with most of the depreciation curve traveled to date.......time to drive the thing more although I do drive it every week..........along with my other cars......

The AMG overall seems to be a better built car than even the NEW 911 with better quality materials used in many areas of the car.........again the NEW 911, after second thoughts did not turn me on.......my 993 still can give me the sport car feel.....

Different type of cars.........count my blessing I have the 993 to run hard and the SL to cruise a bit.......

A nice one with those miles will do $48K or so at Manheim.

Trades are so dicey in that your actually playing with the gap; a shrewd dealer can make the number look how they want. Admittedly in the day of the web and all the info on invoicing, holdback, etc, the buyer is operating from a better place but you'll always take a whack on the trade. Plus, I didn't catch the year on your 65, but if older than 4 years or so a lot banks are unwilling to offer traditional auto loans. My point is that the dealer knows it will take a special type of buyer for that car...and, they may not even want to deal with it on their lot unless they think they can make a good buck...hence the lowball offer.

The new 991 Carrera S is quite impressive. A larger car than before with a much nicer interior than the prior 911's. (Much of the interior borrowed from the Panamera).

Though I had never considered owning a Porshe before, I must say the newest 991 Carreras are quite impressive indeed!

I just sold my 06 SL65 with 64K on it. I sold for 41K and I had one person interested at that level. I think at 55 you will have it a long time. These cars don't bring much once they have some age on them and are out of warranty.
I bought an 09 SL65 I also have a 991 they are very similar except the SL is more GT and the 991 is more sports car. Porsche narrowed the distance between them quite a bit.

is there another Porsche dealer nearby you could engage for some competitive bargaining on the total package? (trade-in & purchase price)

you always get lowest price on trade-ins. It's a hassle but best to sell on your own.

Spring is around the corner and a good time to sell. I'd recommend Autotrader.com is a good sellers/buyers site. Good-luck.

Thats is one concern with Porsche...Not nearly as many Dealerships compared to Mercedes-Benz. I actually have (5) MB Dealerships within 20 miles of my home which gives me a good choice for when it comes to sales and service. Furthermore, there are actually (4) more Authorized MB Dealerships within 60 miles for a grand total of (9). That is 3-times the number of Dealerships that Porshe has in Southeast Florida.

It would be a bad feeling to be "at the mercy" of a local Porshe Dealership for service and sales simply because no others were located conveniently nearby. I guess it is fortunate for me that (3) Porsche Dealeres do exist in Southeast Florida, just not so convenient since these (3) are spaced more than 50 miles apart. Locations are West Palm Beach, Pompano Beach/(FTL), and Coral Gables/(Miami). I would imagine there are far fewer Porsche Dealerships in most other areas of the USA. so not as much choice as MB when it comes to Dealerships.

Understandable of course since Porshe has not enjoyed the broad appeal of MB since the Porshe reputation is built soley around its sports cars. Hopefully, the success of the Cayenne SUV and the Panamera Sedan will help add more Porshe Dealerships over time. I am also convinced they will only gain Sports Car marketshare with the new, much-improved 991's. The 991 is far more luxurious car now and therefore a much more serious competitor for MB's SL line now. The Cayman/Boxter mid-engine twins have consistently been worthy opponents to the SLK and will continue to challenge in that segment. The Panamera Sedan and the Cayenne are not too shabby either!

Seems to me that Porshe is on a bit of a roll now with more all-new models coming soon! If you haven't seen one up close recently, I suggest you take a look at the 991's. I did, and came away quite impressed!

Giving back to the forum.

Looks like your SL is worth mid 40's wholesale.

The 991 is definitely more GT and less sports car than previous 911s and it may be that's what the market demands. Buyers in China and Russia (respectively the no 2 and no 4 markets worldwide) don't "get" the 911 - they want Cayennes and Panameras and the 991 is now much more a GT to convince them it's a worthy contender.

China is expected to become their biggest market in 5 years and that will continue to influence what they serve up. The Cayenne diesel, which does not even use a Porsche engine, is the biggest selling model variant.

Meanwhile, the new SL is being reviewed very favourably here, as in "the best convertible". Just a pity it is so pig ugly.

When trading in a big sexy sports car and I mean most, think of a figure you
would like, then think around half that and after you come down from a rage,
think of half the figure that wound you up, that's about right.
Funny how cars are so sought after, and your lucky to get one when the sales guy is selling, and then when your part ex the car it's, we wouldn't want
it, and we would trade it on, even if your car is superbly immaculate and a top seller. I'm afraid it's one rule for them, and you know the rest.

I think you're onto something there. When I was in Hong Kong and China, I couldn't believe the amount of Cayenne's and especially Panamera's getting around. 911's are rare indeed. I also like the fact that the 991 is becoming more of a GT car

The Cayenne is so popular in China because of their bad roads. You simply CANNOT drive a Carrera there.

Oh man

I sure would have looked over that '06 at that price. I just gave a bit more than that for an '05 and i am happy. It had 33% less miles, but man. Anyway, i agree with ALX. I use Edmunds, but i rechecked at kelly to be sure and as the one post noted, '05, mid 40's wholesale with mid 40's mileage, and that's what i paid.

As a newbie here, but not in watching the car market, these cars sure do drop fast compared with say 911 turbo, Aston Martin, etc. i don't get it? I will get mine in 10 days, but from everything i see, i don't see why they depreciate so much, so fast? Hand built V12 bi-turbo, in a killer convertible hard top coupe, plus, plus, plus, please...

Porsche and BMW have a cult like following. Both brands are often seen at the track. The BMW online group and aftermarket is pretty damn big.

Aston Martin is an exotic.

Benz is a different story. Going from BMW to Benz had been a culture shock. If I had any leftover BMW parts, I'd post them online and they would be gone in a day. I have a much harder time moving my leftover Benz parts. The BMW online community...HUGE. The Benz online community...not that big. While I know there are some loyal Benz guys, it seems most Benz owners shop other brands and even the loyal Benz guys upgrade every time a new model hits the dealer. While the previous generation Benz cars are still great, the lack of a cult/racing following and HIGH repair costs keep a lot of buyers away.

At $30-$50k, the 55, 600, and 65 cars are absolute steals. But they aren't really exotics like Aston/Ferrari, they aren't really track ready like BMW/Porsche, and keeping a SL65 out of warranty on the road as a daily driver will run you $5-$10k a year.

I'm praying that respectable warranty companies still offer platinum coverage for the V12 and AMG cars in a year when my plan is up.
