Question Couple loose or detached parts from top cover on SL55

So I notices when the top is down that one piece of the top cover is lose and the other was missing but I later found it in the truck. I tried to take apart the large cover piece that swings on an arm but could not get it apart to see if it could be tighten. The smaller piece seems to have a small spring on it but some of the little plastic clips look broken. I am taking the car on Friday to the MB dealer so perhaps they can fix them both?

That part is around $580. I need one as well, very common.

That 2" by 6" plastic part is $580 dollars? Or do you mean the entire section that has the swing arm with the curved pad and the small spring loaded part is $580?

They do not sell the small section alone, you would have to buy the whole part. I know blows big time. Best thing to do is find one in a scrap yard or check ebay for a wrecked SL and offer to buy the piece.

Sounds like a plan... which models are most common (in junk yards) and will work with my 2005 SL55? Also part number/name I should be looking for?

Ugh. My spring return on that flap on the passenger side broke. The cover likes to flap in the wind when the windows are up and the top is down.

I'm really not interested in paying 1/60th of my car's current value to replace that part so I am looking at other options.

If you can't reattach that part... you may be SOL.

Found this for you guys
https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...ism-my-sl.html
and this
https://mbworld.org/forums/sl-class-...placement.html

Damaged hinge on driver side psnrel I had the same problem did a LOT of searching. My local dealer was willing to give me a 10% discount off the $368 price tag. This put the price at 354.39 after tax.

I then found one on a 2006 with an intact hinge and door. The only problem was the fabric had a cut in it and the pin that goes in the pointed end of the door was broken off the panel. It just had too much wear and neglect to put on my 2005 SL with less than 20,000 miles on it.

By the way this is called a "panel" by Mercedes and the official part number for my car, silver with charcoal interior, is 230-690-09-41-9C83.

I tried several repairs, the last being tying wire around the hinge. I just was not satisfied with the result.

So, then I decided I was going to buy a new one. Just had to find the right seller. flyjets01 above set me on to Parts.com. They set me on to 3 buyers all less than $300. However when you added in their shipping and handling, up to $38, then the price went over $300. Finally I found Mercedes-Benz of Naperville, Ill, 630-305-4560 and Joe Messineo, Parts guy. He sold me the panel for $283.50, no tax or shipping.

So, if you need parts, especially a 230-690-09-41-9C83, call Joe.

I’ve attached a parts blow up. Part no 370 is the panel with the hinge in it.

Good luck.

Thank you for getting all of this info together for us! I am going to the dealer on Friday so I will see what kind of deal they can cut me and if nothing then I will give Joe a call!

Thanks again,

No problem dig, I'm missing the drivers side for about a year now. Too concerned with going faster to pay any mind to the cosmetics. Let me know how it works it out, I may give Joe a call as well.

What about the large panel directly behind the small panel that has the "S" bend in it? Mine is loose and I can not figure out how to tighten it down?

Thanks for all the thread links as it looks like some good tips on DIY repair on this very common problem with a $120K car??????
