600 or 65
I know we have crossed this subject, but my project to buy and tune a
SL600 got me thinking. Maybe buy a SL65 and tune it. Has anybody tuned
a 65, is 700 bhp available without breaking anything.

I have both an SL600 and an S65 that are Eurocharged tuned. I would estimate the peak HP is up about 10% and the average torque is up 10% with bigger torque gains at lower RPM. I believe this is also about what Eurocharged represents. Bigger gains are possible with different tune programs. Mine run on 91 octane and pass California emissions. The 6.0 liter 65 engine responded better to the tune than the 5.5 liter 600 engine. With a more agressive tune and some mods both engines have much more in them. I doubt either engine is likely to fail at these levels but have no facts to back up that opinion.
Tuned the S65 is faster than the tuned SL600 even with the 500 pound weight penalty.
Either an SL600 or an SL65 is a great choice and both can be greatly enhanced.

the 600 engine responds very well to a SIMPLE tune

I tend to be conservative when I estimate things that have not actually been measured either on a dyno or on the track. It is possible the peak HP is up 100. My observation is the 65 is up by the same amount, or slightly more so starting with an SL65 is a good decision if the right one can be found. I say this as an owner of two SL600's that I have no regrets in purchasing.

Sorry for the confusuion, I was comparing the weight of my S65 to an SL600. I think an SL65 and an SL600 weigh about the same.

You can pick up a nice SL600 in the states for about $30k.
A nice SL65 in the states still runs about $45k.
For the $15k difference in price, you are almost at the amount needed to purchase a Speed-driven kit to put the SL600 at 1000hp.

.......... but the $1,000 tune on the sl600 will make it faster than a stock sl65
neighbor just bought a 04 sl600 with 26k on the dial for $35,000 with a speedriven tune that had been added. the car is WICKED fast as is my wife's TUNED SL600.

Thanks guys for the info, I am going to drive a 2004 SL65 on Saturday,
were any mods done after 2004. The last time I drove a 65 was about 2 years ago, the sales guy was useless the paintwork was flat and it had
been standing on a garage front for 4 months. Needless to say it drove
sluggish, so I am hoping this one is better. Then I will try a SL600.
looking at 50k for 65 and 35 for 600, if I can get 60k for my 63 it will
pay off what I owe, then I will own a SL with no ties.
For all those saying... I thought he loved his 63.... well I have been smitten
by that V12 TT acceleration,

07' SL65, 04' E55, 03' Evo8, 08' GSXR, DSM's...
Don't know if you consider them "mods", but to the 07+ it gets the actual paddles, different bumper, has a different firmware version or such for the ecu. So just some small things. Good luck.

Thanks again, but would you believe it, I can only find 4 SL65 and 3 SL600
in the Country. And they are all 2004, just shows how many they sold
compared with the SL55 and SL500.
