First trip to the Drag Strip....FINALLY!

This weekend we finally were able to get my SL65 to the dragstrip to see what it could actually do. I am posting the timeslips....#1 was my first run ever on a dragstrip. #2 was suffering a bit from heat soak and it felt like the car just coasted down the last half of the track. #3 was our last attempt after we got things cooled down. We had to leave according to NHRA rules for breaking the 11.5 second barrier.

Is your SL65 completely stock? If not, what mods have you done? Stock street tires? Those times and speed seem very quick!

OE Tune which gained us about 60HP on the Dyno at about 565HP. Then added SpeedDriven Intercoolers and secondary heat exchanger and continuous running pump. Rear tires are 275/40/17 Hoosier Drag Radials. I think that is about it. Ambient temps on Sunday were running close to 75F

That makes two of us with SL65's that made it to the drags this weekend!

I wanted to break the 10.8 barrier and got a best of 10.72 @ 129 MPH! Just bumped Renntech off the top of the dragtimes list....woohoo!

I think you need a roll cage if you are sub 11.50s. At least thats the rules at the IHRA track that I've been to in Pittsburgh. But They seem to relax the rules if its a Test n Tune night. I've seen plenty of cars run <11.50s repeatedly and plenty of helmet-less drivers running sub 14s (another rule) on TnT nights.

Great runs to both of you btw. I did see the twingtx's run on drag times the other day when they first posted it.

High 1.6 60 ft pedaling it out of the hole. Anything more than 1/2 throttle and above idle speed launch, spins horribly, the 60 foot goes away, and so does 1/8 mile ET and 1/4 mile ET.

High 70's to mid 80's temps. No D/A meter present but air was decent and track is near seal level.

Mods: ECU tune, E85 fuel, custom ATPTURBO Fabbed intercoolers using Garrett 1000HP cores, secondary heat exhchanger for Mustang GT500 up front, Meziere(sp?) pump, everything else stock including turbo back to tailpipe. The car has no weight reduction at all and has the added weight of a 50 lb drag legal 5 point rollbar and associated gear.

Finally got it to trap 105 MPH on the 8th so I'm happy about that. I think with good track prep it will do a little better on the 8th and break 130 MPH on the 1/4 mile trap. We shall see soon!

You're right. First time it ran 11.4, they said, put a rollbar in it or don't come back. I came back with a rollbar and learned how to launch the SL into the 10's. Now they are saying if the car goes 135 MPH, they want a full NHRA certified 10 point cage and drag race license. At that point, it won't be fun any longer because I won't be able to drive home from the track with the top down......

Impressive times. So guess you need roll "cage" since 65's already have a roll bar?

I spent the better part of last Thursday on the phone with various NHRA officials as well as track officials in the area because the first time I called the track they told me they wouldn't let me on the track without a rollbar. According to NHRA rules, as best as I remember them, any car running 11.49 or less needs a rollbar. An OEM rollbar as in the SL65 does not meet standards. The offcial rollbar must be of 1.75 inch tube steel welded in place with a minimum of two rear supports. Also needed is a 5 point safety harness and a helmet rated Snell 2005 or later(2000 is now void). As BobLibSL55 stated, it appears on Test and Tune events and Grudge Matches, some tracks tend to relax the rules a bit.
A car running 9.99 or faster must have a full roll cage with 8 point pillars(whatever that is), along with the harness and helmet mentioned previously. I didn't pay to much attention to the 9.99 rule since I highly doubt I will ever get to that point.

In two weeks we hit Maple Grove to make one last try before the season ends. Lots of changes to make before then to see if we can shave another few tenths.

Did you need to change injectors to run E85?

Sounds like the set up is working pretty well for you. Do you have any pics of under the hood?

Yes, much bigger injectors to run E85. That is when I discovered the interesting titbit that the stock 600 injectors are made by Siemens but the 65's stock injectors are Bosch. One of those things that make you go...hmmm...

It looks just like all the other V12TT's under there with bigger than stock IC's. The biggest problem I have is cold air because the inlet ducts although the same as the S600 get less incoming air on the SL because of tighter frontal area (smaller nose). It appears to heatsoak a lot more. I've re-arranged the inlets about 4 times now and I'm in the middle of the next iteration. Will take some pics of the bay when the cold air intakes are final. Even with all the cooling mods, I'm just not happy still with the IAT during a pass.

Jeremy, we couldn't have done it without your help! If the weather holds we hope to better these times November 3rd. I was going to post a video but Chris just finished one so I will attach a link. The end of the video shows my last and best run of the day against a heavily modded Camaro. Thanks again and we will keep you posted as we move forward

Exactly....I was hoping to see your larger ICs and how they were positioned. As of now there are only the speedriven and a couple one offs. As you mentioned the SL nose is stuffed even though all the V12tts suffer from the heat. In addition to icing between runs some guys do small amount of cool down driving around the back area of the track to allow the engine temps to come down a bit along with the intercooler fluid temps. Do you or have you considered a trunk reservoir? good luck keep pushing the envelope.

Here you go. They were built so they bolt onto the stock compressor outlets pipes and plastic Y-pipe at the throttle body.....and none of the 4 water hoses need to be cut or modified. In fact they were built and run on my S600 first, then I just transfered them right over to my SL65.

Thanks for the pics those things are monsters!!! How was your tune created, did you dyno tune it? and/or do you run a data logger with 02 bungs to get true air/ fuel readings? Looks like a pretty straight forward parts list, cool to see you are getting your use out of them after the 600.
