Question Performance Suspension Alternatives for SL55

Hey Guys

Need some help. My Cuz's SL55's Air suspension is leaking again and this is getting really tiring to replace agin and again as it keeps breaking down.

is there any way to replace the OEM air suspension with coilovers and program the car or bypass the sensors so it doesnt give us an air ride failure error?

The OEM Hydraulic suspension is a pain and has got to go.

there was a company that made a kit to get rid of them on the cls i think that was talked about a few weeks ago. they would not fit on the sl though.
but, it seems they figured out how to trick the computer (which would be the toughest part anyways). i would talk to them about that part and see if they would sell just that portion. then you could find a coilover of choice by searching for correct extended and compressed heights. take out stock coil and test pressure and use as a baseline to match the new coil on the new coilover.
it is on my list of things to do, but who knows if i would ever get around to it. that is till mine start leaking and acting up, lol.

The ABC sytem is not an air suspension like the airmatic system. Do not confuse both systems.

A coilover conversion hasn't been done yet on the R230 chassis, according to my knowledge. It would be a complicated and costly solution.

Yes, not air suspension. They are hydraulic units.

Check this out for alternatives.......Geo.

yeah I meant to say Hydraulic, I know its not an Air suspension. I wish someone would just go ahead and do a proper coil over conversion on the SL55

Yeah I am in touch with Geo3 in the thread. Problem is no one attempting to make coils for this car. It would be great on it.

Thanks for all the help guys. Lets keep this thread going and find a solution for the community.

the abc is the best suspension bar none for the 4400 pound sl.

get it fixed and enjoy the best of smooth ride, great high speed directional stability, flat cornering and no dive at aggressive braking.

if you are technically capable of swapping the whole suspension then you are prolly capable of repairing the stock abc suspension too. get if fixed.

my 2 cents

I think it's a joke that Mercedes didn't warranty the ABC system on all of these cars for 10 years (like the SBC system). It's obvious to anyone who has a CLS, S class, CL, SL.....that it's not a question of if the ABC will fail....but when....and make no mistake....just because you fix the problem doesn't mean it won't come right back.

I have no doubt that a majority of the service $$ that Mercedes makes on the models above is based off ABC-related repairs.

It's absolutely something that should not be an issue on a $100,000 car. It's faulty engineering....bottom line.

The sbc was warranted because it was a safety risk. Read- liability. The abc is not. Hence the standard warranty.

Yes ok BUT it keeps bloody breaking down every 1-1.5 years! Do you know how much each strut costs here in Bahrain? almost $2k!!! Its an absoultely crap system as far as quality goes.

Oh and if the car doesnt have sways then converting to Coils might be a bit difficult but do-able. The main issue would be to convert the ABC pump to a regular PS system. It'll take a bit of time but its not impossible.

Buy arnott struts which carry lifetime warranty. $800 before shipping. The valve blocks can be rebuild for 20 dollars each. Never seen one go bad electronics- wise. The tandem pump can be had for about $1000 brand new. Hoses are couple hundred bucks or less esch and most of them are new and updated parts. Parts.com is your friend.

The monster ain't that scary. Knuckle up
