Heat Exchanger consensus

Alright guys, I am going to replace my I/C pump with the 010 Bosch unit, and wanted to add a secondary heat exchanger as well (Like most of the 55k guys do). I've been reading the W211 E55 forum for a while, and thought I would use their diagrams as an example of installation. Turns out that our set-up differs from theirs as our stock heat exchanger is sandwiched between the primary radiator and a/c condenser, while on the E55's I believe there is a smaller heat exchanger looking thing in front?

Anyways, for those running the secondary h/e which size did you end up going with? The 2" deep unit or the 3.5" unit?

I also noticed that the trend with the SL55's setup is that he stock and 2nd h/e are run in series with each other. Anyone have a diagram of this?

Thanks!

In addition, here's a shot of the belt wrap kit I just installed today:

with my trunk tank and an aftermarket he i am consistently only 10-15 degrees over ambient. big help is the separation of the coolant system.
there is lots of diagrams i found showing the direction of flow, but, you can also look at the pump flow direction, and figure it out by tracing the lines. it is a very simple system. it would almost make no difference which way the water traveled. just keep your pick up point low (you want to run through stock he first, then to the aftermarket he) i ran pump input line off of the aftermarket he and output to the intercooler.

Sound good. Is the unit you purchased 2" or 3.5" deep? Just wanna make sure there is enough space for the 3.5".

I think that you are going to have fitment issues if you go too big... I am having FTP install (their shop is just down the road from me) the smaller of the two they offer next week because I don't want to deal with the fitment issues or trimming issues as one of their other customers did that got the bigger one...

This is from the FTP fb page:

"I have been driving the car for a couple days since install and can tell temps running lower than usual. Car seems to pull noticeably harder each time I get on it. Installation on the Sl55 required us to leave the stock heat exchanger and loop it to the intercooler pump and FTP H/E. We also had to set the oil cooler behind the FTP H/E. The bumper fitment was a bit difficult but not impossible and required some trimming on the inside. The customer ...service I received was from Steve has been top notch. I was concerned about what lines to run where for the plumbing but received a link to a diagram from Steve that made the job too easy. The FTP heat exchanger is a must for any stock or upgraded AMG"

barney, it is the mechanism of the he that i find stunning too.

anywho, raffi, the one i have is 3.5". i did post a link in my build thread to the exact one i purchased. same as frozenboost, but a little cheaper. i went abit crazy on the mounting anticipating a car that can reach 200mph and the wind pressure in that area though and modified the mounts.
you will need to change position of the oil cooler though. i was able to do it by just loosening the lines (but still connected) and twisting it up to be above the bumper bar. will need to cut the shrouds on the side though to accomadate this. keep the he flush with the bumper and you should be fine with fascia clearance.

Thanks for the input guys, I think i'm gonna go ahead and order the 3.5" unit from frozenboost. (skimmed over your build thread and don't think I saw a link to the one you purchased). Hopefully I won't have any problems with the 63 bumper. Any chance you still have pictures of the bracket mounts you fabricated for it?

So you are going to buy bosh 010? what about the HE? where you gonna buy it from? because i am also a 55k guy who is digging around the data for secondary HE. Plus, i got to ask you this. after you installed that belt Warp kit. how does your car response? coz i am thinking about it as well. we are in same shoe i guess.

Hey Crazyfox, how's that veilside widebody SL doing? Don't think I forgot about that! One rare kit you got there, you need to show off with some new pics.

Anyway, yes I am going to buy the newest pump which is the 010, and the heat exchanger I am going to purchase from frozenboost.com with the 3.5" core. Regarding the belt wrap kit, I haven't even driven it after it was installed haha. The car is still at the shop and almost done with the facelift conversion. Either way I think it's worth the money, lots of positive reviews on it. I think I even saw somewhere that it gained ~20hp with just the wrap kit. Can't go wrong.

haha raffi! you just made my day i think! (dang! i still can't stop smiling!) hehe

Yup i am loving my SL each day by day. And the HP bug just bit me so. I am in the hunt for the HP gain mod. like secondary HE, belt warp kit, ECU tune. That will be it i guess. i don't want to go for bigger pulley, because i live in hot climate country and don't want to shut out my SC in hot day. By your recommendation i will pull the trigger on belt warp. who that's guy again? how did you process your payment and item?

It's very nice to see you with on going progresses. keep up posted tho. you just got one fan!

Cheer! =)

Hey exotic, the facelift is about 95% complete. After that I am gonna start the performance oriented mods, like the 3.5" intake set up, installing my S/C pulley, heat exchanger, exhaust etc.. So far I have only installed the Bosch 010 pump. I set my mind on the frozenboost 3.5" core H/E and will go with that. I will update as soon as everything is good to go.

Got my frozenboost h/e about two weeks ago, and returned it the next day. FTP sells the same unit contrary to what anyone says. My ZZP unit will be here early next week. I'll post some pics once installed.

Well, apart from the fact that it's originally made to be an air to air intercooler, then modified to be a heat exchanger... it weighs close to 20 pounds. As soon as I picked up that thing, I told myself it's gotta go.

Installation went pretty smooth. Only had to move one of the brackets a little to the right to make room so it sits snug. I posted a picture in the W211 forum i'll try to find it.

Thanks. The AIT's were already in check as I have the Bosch 010 pump, but after this set up, it seems to cool down much faster after WOT pulls. I just got it as a precautionary thing before I start doing mods that increase boost.
