Purchased 03 SL55 AMG with very LOW Oil in Crankcase

I recently purchased an 03 SL55 AMG and yesterday I had the oil changed out. I was SHOCKED to find that only 4.2 Quarts of Very Dirty Oil came out of the crankcase. The oil level as all of you know is 9 Quarts.

My question is... What potential damage could have been done to the engine ?

YOUR REPLIES WILL BE MOST WELCOME.

For starters i think i would change out the oil level sensor. You should have been getting warnings non-stop about a low oil level.

Being extremely low on oil can do quite a bit of damage, especially if driven hard. You are probably ok though. No weird noises or glittery oil right? Good luck.

Thanks Aaron for your reply. The suggestion of changing the oil level sensor is exactly what I thought to do as well. The engine seems to run fine... no glittery oil..

fill it back up with 9 quarts. Buy a MB dipstick tool and monitor oil consumption.

Hello, McFly.........there are two drain plugs!!!

Seriously, there really are two drain plugs on a SL55 oil pan. For goodness sake go back and drain BOTH sumps and refill it with 9.5 quarts. Don't drive the car overfilled with oil.

This is the fist time I have heard of this car having 2 drain plugs.. I went by the DYI video posted on here.

Are you sure there are 2 plugs in an 03 SL55 AMG ?
