Fitting SL63 rear bumper to SL55

I have been lucky enough to purchase a brand new genuine SL63 rear bumper that I am going to fit to my SL55.

Anyone got any hints and tips on doing this as am going to do it myself. Bumper in for paint now and will have it back next week.

I know I need to modiy the existing parking sensors to fit (remove the outside ring), but anything else I need to be aware of?

The few people who have done it on the forums say it's very easy, but I am wary of people that say things like that... experience has taught me to be so LOL!

you will have to buy the new internal brackets and braces to fit the new bumper, you will find the origionals dont fit in the new bumper. you can cut and fit a couple of the pieces to fit the new one. the hardest part is taking all the trunk carpets and tail lites out to get to the screws

I have done the conversion on my car and this post pretty much sums it up.

Yes, should have said that I have all the brackets and braces for the new bumper so won't have to modify anything. Does it fit with the undertray correctly or does that need modifying?

I have had the rear bumper off the car in the past so I know about the carpets etc. It was a right pain, but at least I know how to do it now.

Also do I need to take the the parking/back-up sensor mounts off the bumper to modfy them to fit the old sensors? Or can I modify them in situ. If I do need to take them off what is the best way as they seem to be bonded to it.

I just did this & added the RevoZport RBS diffuser as well Sounds like you know about the carpets... although those are rather easy once you figure out the lil tricks on taking them off & I don't even go that far I just used a long extension & universal on my ratchet and only removed the two clips then just held the carpet back slightly. You really only need to buy the center inside frame because the side internal frames were a direct swap & I reused them from my original bumper. as far as the splash guards, I completely removed the one under the trunk because the diffuser came with a nice new CF plate that I installed in it's place so I can't really say if that needs to be replaced BUT you will need new back wheel well bits because your old ones will work but they aren't as wide as the new bumper so they don't completely cover it on the inside

Thanks for your advice. Excuse my ignorance, but when you say new 'back wheel well bits' do you mean the wheel arch liners?

you can cut the tray to make it fit. and you have to take the black brackets off the bumper to cut them up then glue the whole thing back to the bumper. you have to find a plastic epoxy to do all the gluing
I think they have a 2 stage epoxy at hardware stores or lowes or HD

The brackets for the bumper aren't a problem as I have new ones supplied with the bumper. 5 in total - 1 large one for across the back and then 2 for either side.

The undertray. Instead of cutting it can I fit an SL63 one?

Thanks all of you for your help, I am in the UK and when I asked this on the UK forum all I got was tumbleweed rolling through my thread

Looking at this link:

Rear floor

It seems to say the undertray is the same for the SL55 as for the SL63. That can't be right can it?

REAR END FLOOR
Models:
SL 500 03-06, SL 55 AMG 03-06, SL 55 AMG 07-08, SL 600 04-06, SL 600 07-11, SL 63 AMG 09-12, SL 65 AMG 05-11

It lists 2 covers:

2306190338 COVER.
Required: 001
BELOW SPARE WHEEL WELL
[20060308 - 20060308]: "AMG SIGNATURE SERIES/BLACK SERIES" SPECIAL MODEL

2306190738 COVER.
Required: 001
BELOW SPARE WHEEL WELL
[20060308 - 20060308]: NOT FOR "AMG SIGNATURE SERIES/BLACK SERIES" SPECIAL MODEL

Is the SL63 an AMG signature series?

The MB dealers here can't help me at the moment as I don't have an SL63 chassis number.... sigh!

OK made a lot of progress with this but now stuck assmebling the new bumper. Have all the reinforcers etc. with it. The main one clips on so that's no problems, but struggling with the other parts. I can see how they fit but have no idea how to secure them.

With the bumper came a bag of bits contaning the following:

4 threaded bolts with what look like rivets on the other end
6 large u clips (the ones you clip over and screw through)
2 smaller u clips (the ones you clip over and screw through)
12 tiny u clips (no bolt holes with these)
2 plastic posts that have a push through and lock expanding end

No bolts or screws though.

Any ideas on how to proceed?

you should look at the old one before you take it apart, compare what you have to do to put another one back togather. Basic mechanical work. There isnt any instructions for alot of things. Now your the mechanic so you have to rely on your own ability.

Yeah made some progress.... seems I need some plastic rivets as I finally found an exploded diagram for the SL63 rear bumper.

Looked at the old one and it is indeed plastic riveted so that is the way to go.

Also have two small extra brackets that I don't know where they go so may post a pic of those later and see if anyone who has done this recognises them. Everything else is obvious as to the location.... these aren't.... yet

so you can get bumper off and on without completely removing carpet? Do you have pictures of bumper and diffuser?

to confirm parts needed and mods required:
- SL63 center bracket
- remove outer ring from parking sensors
- SL63 rear wheel well splash guards
thats it?!

thanks Mick

I know I’m resurrectjngmold post but trying to get this done for my SL55 as well.

did you forgive out the differences and where everything went? If so do you have pictures and any other findings from doing the installation?

thanks
