Removing the resonators from an SL63?

I just purchased a 2009 SL63 two weeks ago and love the exhaust note but would like for it to be just a touch louder. I feel that it is almost non-existent unless you are going WOT. I would love to hear a little more noise at lower revs.

I have removed the resonators from the previous three SL55's that I had and it made them sound great. It increased the volume slightly without changing the tone of the exhaust or becoming obnoxiously loud with drone.

Has anyone removed the resonators from their 09-11 SL63? I have read various results on the C63 forum but their exhaust layout is slightly different. It seems that their resonator is one piece where both pipes merge and ours has two separate resonators instead.

Mate, I have no idea whether it will sound better or not, you can check on youtube. But I assume that the SL63 has a good stock sound, why would you need to remove your resonator. Keep it classy! AMG V8s sound is just perfect as is!

Don't get me wrong, the stock sound is lovely. I just want more of it. Unfortunately there are only stock sound/video clips of the SL63 and one that has headers on YouTube .

Maverick: Quite the stable you got there. Did you take out the resonators on any of your M156 cars?

Did you replace the cats and resonators? I remember the 600 guys were removing their mufflers to get a great sound from the V12.

All the cars that do not have headers have had the resonators and secondary cats removed, in fact that was the first thing I did on each car. I added back after market resonators to tone down long tube headers only

Watch this:

Guys I think he will need a remap after removing cats, or no?
Doesn't it run on rich fuel (it will smell fuel from the exhaust)??

I think that sounds awful and would drone like a ***** too. I have tested removing mufflers on SL63 and while it might sound tough as he'll from the outside, it is just toooo loud and drones in cabin

SL65 only has primary cats and no resonators. I have a 3 inch full exhaust will no cats with hi-flow mufflers and dual exhaust cutouts.

I can tell you it makes it sound like an exotic car and it is much much much louder. When I drive with the cutouts open and it flows freely the openings it very loud even at low speeds. And at WOT ive had people tell me they could easily hear me 1-2 miles away, but when your cruising in your car at 40 mph you can hear it clearly and it can be a good and a bad thing. If you have cops behind you or you have a bad thing it can be a bad thing.

With no cats, cutouts closed and having the exhaust flowing to the hi-flow mufflers its loud only at WOT but when your cruising its quieter so if you have a headache or if cops are following, it will sound a bit deeper but wont give you that "hey look at me" sound.

Investing in cutouts was a well spent extra having the ability to open and close that cutout valve

Funny thing is I have an SL63 and just did a muffler delete, replaced them with straight pipes, be honest with you I think it's the better option really just brings out the pop and gurgle in the exhaust without creating too much drone atleast to me I think it shoulda came this way from the factory

I'm assuming you had the mid-mounted resonators cutout and not the rear mufflers as seen in this picture, correct? What year is your SL and is there any way I could talk you into recording a couple of quick sound/video clips with your phone?

Personally I find the 2009 63 is a bit loud for everyday cruising , but it
sounds spectacular with your foot down. I never fiddle with exhausts I like
quiet cars, except when your gunning it.

Ended up removing the resonators on this SL63 and it sounded glorious. It ended up being the Kleemann headers, high flow cats, and stock mufflers.

Finally got my resonators deleted today! they just opened up the exhaust sound, compared to stock, which sound a bit restrictive. The sound is more distinguishable, more back fire gurgle and pop and the car does not drone at cruising speeds both streets and motorway. The exhaust screams at WOT, due to high rev limit and being an NA motor.

Overall amazing mod and best $100 ive spent. I kept the resonators so if i ever get bored, i can always get them put back on lol

In the diagram for the exhaust system, did you remove part 159 for resonators and replace with straight pipe? I'm getting quotes for 150-250 in my area for resonator removal + x-pipe. Is x-pipe even necessary on the SL63?

These are the resonators (part 159 in diagram). Have them remove the resonators and replace with straight pipe. Also have them remove the secondary cats (part 158 / B in diagram) and put an x-pipe in their place, this will not cause any CEL or issues as they're post O2 sensors. It will smooth out the sound and help with exhaust scavenging since it's an NA engine. That price sounds reasonable if they're doing all of the above mentioned work.

Thanks for the clarification, if i remove the secondary cats and replace with x-pipe would that cause me to fail a smog test? I'm in california

I just got the two resonators removed and replaced w straight pipe on each side... sounds magnificent. Noticeably louder than stock but not too loud. Love hearing the crackles. 😁
