Round Round Get around, I got a round
For a long time I have wanted round instead of square tail pipes. The
trouble is the square pipes are not joined to the exhaust end. So I took
her to some race car fabricators. Turbos like free flowing systems, and
the dogs dinner blowing exhaust gases into a funnel then out of square tips
would be a no no. So they put 3 inch pipe from my back box then split it
in to 2 3 inch pipes. I love the look but it's quite different to drive.
Less cabin noise, superb throttle response, and without saying at least another 50 hp I will refrain, let's just say it definitely feels quicker.
It's very smooth like a SL65, and with your foot down you get a sharp
crackle, instead of a farty rustle. Great on long journeys, do not know why
MB have designed this imo crap, emmissions I have been told, or fashion.
I can't stop driving her, the enthusiasm has returned.

Edit you think tailpipes are possibly emission related? Woah I'm beyond dumbfounded you've lived this long and not drowned in bathtub/shower??
New members note: Im not just randomly picking on this guy, those that have been on these boards long term know of Sound8's ear numbing never ending reign of torture on mbw..

PS highly doubt you gained any hp though your description is vague are you saying, they cut off oem tips from muffler? Then just added true Y pipe to join two round tips? If thats what you're saying sound wont change either? Im truly stumped by your even doing such a mod looks wise? It now looks 110% like a tarted up poser faux 63tt you shud D-badge it to complete the look lol..

However you are completely wrong. The latest Bi TT SL63 does not have
an exhaust system that is complete from turbo to tail trim.
The exhaust ends around 12 inches from the back. The twin square tail
pipes are NOT joined to the exhaust. The other side of the square tail
tips is a funnel which the exhaust end blows in to.The guys who done the work make racing exhausts and the said the most important point for a
turbo engine is a free flowing exhaust, no kinks, sharp bends, and exhaust
ends blowing into funnels.
What they have done is cut the small pipe coming from the back box and
fit a 3 inch pipe split into 2 3 inch pipes out past the bumper by an inch or so. This now gives free flow all the way from turbo to exit .
Obviously before I changed noise and gases escaped under the car giving it that furry sound,
like an exhaust blow. If you try to get bigger pipes in they will be pointing down, so I may get some big ovals but not like Mercs, It will still have the
advantage of being joined to the system.
So please, this was not just done for looks, throttle response is incredible
and it is quicker, just running how it should, I beg some of you to try it.

For some reason Mercedes after all those years have changed from the
recognisable twin oval pipes which stuck out about an inch, and on the
2009 SL63 the sound was amazing. So why fit a crappy system with square
tail trims that sounds like geese farting.
I have never seen a post praising the new 63 exhaust sound, turbo will make
it more quiet but surely MB could have juiced it up a bit.
I was hoping that twin round pipes would give me old 63 sound, well it has
but at a lower level, at least it sounds clean and crackly, with some extra go.

People are so thick
I changed because I don't like square tips, and I don't like the way MB have
designed the systems, it wasn't to gain HP,
there again every little helps.
Try blocking your tail pipes see how much power you loose.

Take your gym bag out of the trunk. That would do more for performance than this mod.

Barring MB obviously leaving your tipps unconnected to actual mufflers due to strict Emission Standards, you've now clearly comitted Emissions violation w/this 50 HP Crackle mod lol..OK 101 Turbocharged Free Flowing exhaust Cliff Notes for special men Optimizing airflow on turbo OEM applications starts & finishes as the shop you went to described..
BUT the last 12" from your MUFFLERS to tipps has ZERO to do with freeing up ANY extra airflow or gains in HP etc etc.. (Unless you intentionally clogged up your exhaust tipps you could put 90 degree bends in your TAILPIPES & it would do NOTHING towards LOOSING or gaining HP or sound or turbo response.. (those gains are ONLY to be had by enlarging the Down Pipe section where exhaust exits the turbs & then enters the Catalytic Converters, running Catless is only way your turbo response will be enhanced as turbos hate any back pressure)
The work you described adding 3" Y pipes that now connect to your eGay exaust tipps from your mufflers (Im guessing your remedial understanding carries over to mufflers too = the back-box?) Does absolutely nothing to performance it's purely a cosmetic disaster.. The percieved super responsive turbos & 50 hp w/new exhaust crackle is ALL in your mind called Placebo Effect
it's quite different to drive.
Less cabin noise, superb throttle response, and without saying at least another 50 hp I will refrain, let's just say it definitely feels quicker.
It's very smooth like a SL65, and with your foot down you get a sharp

Don't mess with Thericker, he is only defending the V12-Drivers...
keep calm , guys - we are only talking Cars...
But I'm on this one with Thericker/Sean, how sound8 bashed the nice Silver Arrow SL guy in the other thread was really, really bad taste...

I have taken my fair share of being bashed over the years, so I understand.
But in this case I thought it was a scam, I have never seen a Silver Arrow
at a dealership, so I thought the guy was pulling our leg, in fact the picture
shown outside the showroom has a different badge than the first one, yet has the same number plate.
You also have to agree that it is the same people who bash me, why I do not
know, this only about my enthusiasm for round exhaust tips . Not the Spanish inquisition : Lol.

You should stick to baking cookies & possibly just possibly, if you get a wild hair? Spring for some fancy floor matts... You're literally drowning right before our very eyes. The shop you went to was just as you drove off. Your beyond remedial grasp of any basic understanding on how free flowing exhaust works on Turbocharged or any FI/NA engines is truly mind boggling...

And you are without doubt the most knowledgeable expert on exhaust
systems in the world. So you think
Let me see how many **** ups you have made.
It's not me that has left my tips unconnected, it's Mercedes, you fool.
What I have done is connected the tail pipes to the muffler.
What MB do is blow exhaust fumes in to an unsealed funnel , obviously because it is not sealed gases particularly at high revs will leak.
I never said you get another 50 hp so please read carefully. Turbos like
free flowing exhaust, or no exhaust at all, any restriction will affect the
performance, like trying to blow gases at 5000 revs into a funnel.
I have taken away the funnel and replaced it with a 3 inch pipe straight
out the back causing no restriction. I can tell how it drives and the sound
it makes it feels keen to go, maybe there is an extra 10 hp, maybe there
is nothing, it still drives better.
The last 12 inches maybe doesn't make any difference, but in this case it's
not just a pipe, it's part pipe, funnel and tips mounted in the body.
It's time for a cookie, WHOOPS I have burned them.

SL 55 and a GT 3000 vr4 Here's my car: http://home.online.no/~ludvs/index.cfm
Congratulations with your new good looking tips sound8, it was good that you finally got the exhaust sorted out.
I wonder if the rest of the sl 63 guys also have done the same mod?
It's good to hear that the sound got an definitive improvement.
Hope mercedes improves the exhaust in the next sl facelift.
Finally spring has arrived.
Happy driving sound8!

Sound8, I didn't miss anything.. You simply are hopeless where technical matters are concerned. The exhaust pipe leading outtve the mufflers not being physically connected to the rectangular AMG tipps a few inches away in rear bumper, again has ZERO effect on improving airflow even if you have them connected w/Y-pipes to the tipps or not... /sound/turbo response/HP/ will not be effected in any way..
Even if you cut off your mufflers & resonators as many do on turbocharged autos to gain better exhaust sound, it wont increase HP or Turbo response whatsoever..
This is my last post on the matter, enjoy your new found 50 hp etc etc...

enough to do it, I did not say it's got another 50 horse power, I said it just
felt better.
However you know nothing about Turbo' power , the more obstacles you remove
from an exhaust system the more boost and power you will get.
The ECU is going to stop big increases but nevertheless you will get more
power, and don't make out people do it JUST for noise, it's also done for
an increase in power.
I don't know why you insist on bashing my posts. We all contribute to this
forum, and if you think someone is talking crap just have a giggle.

Thanks Rune, I do like round pipes, however some people think there to
small, so I may increase them from 3 inches to 4 inches.
There was a Susuki Swift in there to day, having two 6 inch pipes, 1 each
side, I had to laugh the pipe in front was about 1 inch.
I guess he will luv em.
